WASHINGTON -- Democratic senators this week will face trouble trying to cleanse themselves of the stain left by voting for President Bush's Iraq war resolution. Republican senators who have turned against U.S. military intervention in Iraq are not interested in bailing out Democrats by approving their proposal to repeal the 2002 authorization passed overwhelmingly by Congress.
As Congress returns this week from the year's first recess, authorization repeal is supposed to be attached to the bill containing homeland security recommendations by the 9/11 commission. But Sen. Norm Coleman, who has become prominent among Republican critics of Bush's war policy, told me from his home state of Minnesota that he would oppose the de-authorization and predicted no more than two Republican senators would vote for it.
One of those two Republican senators would have to be Chuck Hagel, who has fearlessly critiqued Bush war policy. But he told me from Nebraska that he would not be inclined to support repeal. If Hagel is lost, Democrats might fall short of the 50 senators necessary for final passage, much less the 60 senators necessary to close off debate. George W. Bush may be an unpopular president fighting an unpopular war, but Democrats are finding it hard to make war policy from Capitol Hill.

Lieberman will vote against it. Not sure about Nelson from Florida.
I suppose some of them are looking to change their minds. I believe others are changing because of polls ,and frightened of the folks that elected them. Very few have principles and courage to do whats right, They just want to keep their jobs and perks and sell out America.
I`m waiting for the "surge" to really work and for the War in Iraq to end in victory. Then we can listen to Biden, Reid, and Hillorat all to say that they were for the War as they voted to authorize the president to go into Iraq.
Got a letter from Coleman, asking for money. Told him "not one cent for any white flag republicans"
If the Democrats thought the surge would not work their best political position would be to voice their opposition to the surge but to support the President and the troops. They are scared "shi less" that the surge will work. The Democrat party is totally and 100% invested in our defeat. If the surge works they are toast for twenty years, perhaps forever.
Deauthorization - is that like putting the DVD into reverse play?.......
FYI Ping
Hopefully it will all keep working against them. The pressure Lieberman must be under must be enormous.
Sit back and watch.
The Democrats will cave. The Republicans seem to be acting as if they're in the majority.
The Democrats will knuckle under Lieberman, because Lieberman is already an independent, but he caucuses with the Democrats, but not on this particular issue. Lieberman already said he would not hesistate to switch parties if he was pressured.
So, as it is, the Democrats are walking on eggshells.
I spit on every one of these elected cowardly liars.
