National Right-to-Carry Bill Introduced in Senate
Mexia Daily News ^ | 2/26/07 | Gina Parker Ford

Posted on 02/27/2007 12:23:00 PM PST by kiriath_jearim

Recently, Senator John Thune (R-SD) introduced legislation calling for a national reciprocity of right-to-carry (RTC) licenses for firearm owners across the nation. This bill mirrors one introduced in the House by Representative Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and seeks to create a national system of state-to-state recognition of various RTC licenses and permits.

Much like the recognition of our drivers’ licenses state-to-state, law enforcement officers in Florida would recognize an RTC license or permit issued in Texas. This legislation would eliminate the hassle of having to apply for and carry RTC licenses for each and every state in the Union. The bill not only dispenses with this inconvenience, but also keeps the matter state regulated rather than becoming the responsibility of the U.S. Government.

The importance of this bill cannot be understated. To quote Charlton Heston, former President of the NRA, “the Second Amendment is America’s first freedom.” The American citizen’s right to bear and present arms is one that has been around since this nation’s inception and has continually stood the test of time. If this bill were to pass, the “right to carry” would be an easy way to keep safe no matter where one traveled in America, which was the intention of our founding fathers.

The bill, currently under review by the Senate Judiciary Committee, has gathered considerable clout and the co-sponsorship of 20 Senators, including our own Senator Cornyn!

As Senator Thune emphatically stated, “I strongly support the Second Amendment, which protects ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms.’ I support legislation to protect the American firearms industry.”

If this bill passes through Congress, it will be a milestone for those who exercise their Second Amendment rights, as well as a show of cooperation between the states. I urge you to call Senator Hutchison today and ask her to join Senator Cornyn in support of this historic piece of legislation.

Getting it through a Democratic Congress is akin to pigs flying. We'll see if a federal RTC bill is passed.

Shoulda introduced this bill back when the pubbies, ostensibly, controlled the house and senate. The chances of this ever seeing the light of day to even be voted on now that the socialists are in charge are slim and none.

Why now? Why not 2 or 4 years ago when it could have passed?

Silly me, I always thought the right to carry was already covered under the Constitution.

I love it. I'm planning on buying a handgun and getting a concealed carry permit sometime soon. And also joining the NRA.

Actually, I joined once a few years ago, but the guy who took my membership order on the phone was this squeaky voiced youngster. My membership never arrived, and I forgot about it. I bet that punky kid was a little leftist sent to spike memberships off the phone boards.

Well anyway, this national right to carry would be perfect once I get my handgun. I must research that though, as I don't know what's best for personal protection. Any knowledgeable suggestions?

Well, this is something a girl could really get to like! PA and FL currently have reciprocity. And Alaska doesn't have any permit restrictions at all. But you are going to have to go a long, long way to get Massachusetts on board. You cannot even transit the state with a handgun, if I heard Mr. Tri correctly.

This needs to pass. Most other state licenses are recognized by other states, so why not Concealed Carry Permits?

On the other hand, the chances of this being brought up by the 'pubbies as evidence that they're really, really pro-RKBA are excellent.

Everybody says you should get what is comfortable for you to hold and shoot. Me being a small guy, I'd have a hard time handling a 92F or USP .45.

As of now I'm interested in the USP .40 Compact.

If this passes, this Californian will establish his "official" residence in Texas.

Ok, its Gator time.

I don't like this one little bit.

I see a real bad moon rising here. Bad, bad, bad joss.

We are on the verge of the fedgov nationalizing our driver's licenses. If they get this, next will be a NATIONAL PERMIT no longer controlled by your state, but the fedgov itself. Until another Janet Reno gets into the AG office and REVOKES EVERYONES RIGHT TO CARRY!

Think twice about this my friends. As it is, its up to each state to deal with one another. And that can be good.

With this, I smell sulfur under the door!!

Now, call me paranoid and flame on!

This is good.

Not really. A National Bill means every state will need to conform with regulations put together by Federal Authorities. The Feds will have to take into account the freedoms of those states who already have CCW laws, and those who don't want any such CCW allowed, and they'll favor the latter. And this will alsocase state and local authorities to tighten up things... (IMO).

In short, I don't trust them 1 damn bit.
