PROPOSITION: Municipality denies claims that it's trying to influence April vote.
A group that wants to stop the new smoking ban in bars, bingo halls and other public places filed a lawsuit Monday, saying the Anchorage city government is illegally campaigning on the issue.
Last year, the Assembly voted to expand the city smoking ban to almost everywhere people still smoke in public. But a group calling itself Stomp the Ban said the new rules go too far. It has collected thousands of signatures to wipe out the changes before the new law kicks in July 1.
That petition drive puts the question to voters, who will decide whether to repeal the expanded ban on April 3.
Now the Stomp the Ban folks say the city is trying to sway people to preserve the smoking ban in its public notice published this month in the newspaper and on the city Web site...

I agree totally. I'm a non-smoker but I don't support these nanny-state smoking bans.
I guess the $3.10 tax per pack isn't having enough effect.

Yes! What a great thing to expend energy on! A petition drive to smoke anywhere, anytime! Where I live, the oxygen lovers make it impossible for me to even exhale my cigarette fumes anywhere 20 feet from a doorway! The arrogance of these pantywaists! Suck it up! I paid over $5 a pack and have I ever tried to charge any of these second hand smoke whiners for the nicotine I so dearly paid for? No! They ought to be grateful for any little free whiff they get but no, they are always on a tear about it. God Bless She-Lyin and the rest of the people standing up for this God-given right, making it the utmost litmus test of freedom in this country.
Hey, here's a thought! Why not put a smoke in the Statue of Liberty's mouth! Then she'd really be carrying a torch! Or for that matter, replace the torch, which I hear is aging anyway, with a Zippo lighter!

What, the over two thirds of everybody who votes, who vote "yea" (yay!?) in smoking ban referendums when it's put to a vote?
Guess what Beavis? I quit smoking a week ago today, cold turkey. Didn't even need any of Big Pharm drugs.
But I will STILL stand up for freedoms and the rights of the business owners AND my fellow smokers.
So leave my name out of your diatribes, how about it? You are SOOOOOO useless. Gag ME!

So, are you saying you are one of them???? Is this the reason you are allowed to get away with all of your juvenile ridiculous slanderous postings??????
If this is true, I will have a bone to pick with Jim, and that's for sure!
That was unexpected! Congrats! Keep up the good work! If you fall down, try try try again! Good work!
DON'T patronize me!
I will never ever forget how nasty you have been to me in the past! EVER!
Neither, probably, will my mother....bugged her for years before she quit. She said it was the heart attack of a woman friend, together with that friend's precancerous throat polyps, that finally did the deed.
So many crushed cigarettes, so little time.
Thankless job, mine.
