Just joining thread, know nothing - just wanted to say my prayers are up for all in Enterprise and others affected. Still looking bad in GA, I see.

Early this morning the storm center in Norman, OK put the entire state of Alabama under a high alert for tornadoes (a rarity).

Huntsville (where I'm located) dodged another bullet today. Prayers for those in middle and south Alabama and for those in Georgia, the Carolina's, Virginia, and Florida who have yet to have this system go through your area.

Good description of the typical newsroom.

In all disasters, rumors abound. I always pray it is not as bad as the media are saying it is.

I was born and raised in Enterprise. Attended this very high school in the 60's, and lived close enough to walk to school. My prayers are with all the folks whose lives are being shattered by this.

Shep's report they were in the gym preparing to board buses for home conflicts with other reports they were in halls as would be expected for a tornado warning.

I heard that earlier as well - that the students were gathered in the gym waiting for buses. I didn't really understand it, and now that you mention the halls it makes even less sense.

From the Rome Georgia newspaper on line---

At least 13 killed in Alabama storms

03/01/07

State officials now say at least 13 people were killed as storms swept through south Alabama this afternoon, including eight at Enterprise High School. Several people also have been injured and several are missing.

In Montgomery, state officials said five were dead in Wilcox County. Students at Enterprise High School were taking cover in the hallways after lunchtime when a twister hit the building.

"We were sitting there in the halls. All of a sudden, I look out the window, the wind started to pick up and the roof starts to come off and the whole building collapsed on everybody," said Chase Baldwin, a student at Enterprise high school.

The high school was heavily damaged, said Laren Allgood, a reporter for the Enterprise Ledger.

"It looked like a bomb dropped on the high school," she said. "All the school buses are demolished."

About eight students were trapped in the debris, she said. "They just got one out. Kids are walking around dazed, cut."

Another witness said that a girl was pinned from the waist down when a wall fell on her; another girl was unconscious.

She said alarms alerted the town's 20,000 residents before the tornado hit. "We knew to take cover."

A young man, probably HS age, was on the evening news (natl) and said he pulled two little dead girls out of the rubble (Enterprise) - he seemed to be in shock, saying he's a little upset.

The have just reduced the fatalities here on our local news. They are now saying 9 fatalities. We know many folks who grew up in Camden. Met my husband through them.

From what the local Fox affiliate is saying the reduction in fatalities came from a local state legislator, I believe.

Small world. Pretty little town - some nice old homes. Roland Cooper was a cousin of my grandmother's.
