:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

“The [Taleban] commander issued his death sentence in the name of Islam"
Will the Islamophobia never end?

"Reporter forced to watch Taleban behead his driver," from the TimesOnline, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

An Italian journalist who was held hostage by the Taleban for two weeks described how he was forced to watch as his captors beheaded his Afghan driver.

Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who was released yesterday, told how he feared that he would also be killed after seeing the brutal execution.

“I can still see it now," he wrote in La Repubblica. “The [Taleban] commander issued his death sentence in the name of Islam. He said we were all spies and we had to die. [The translator] is crying. I don’t understand. I ask him what they said and he, in tears, says ’they are going to kill us’.

“I get off my knees. Four young men grab the driver and shove his face into the sand. They cut his throat and continue until they have cut his whole head.

“He is not able to make a gasp. They clean the knife on his tunic. They tie his severed head to his body. They bring it [the body and head] to the river and let it go,” he wrote.

Man gets 30 years for ripping out wife's eyes
The Sydney Morning Herald ^ | March 21, 2007 | unattributed

Posted on 03/20/2007 11:25:58 PM PDT by Fred Nerks

A man who ripped out his wife's eyes in a fit of rage was sentenced by a French court to 30 years behind bars on Tuesday.

Mohamed Hadfi, 31, tore out his 23-year-old wife Samira Bari's eyes following a heated argument in their apartment in the southern French city of Nimes in July 2003 after she refused to have sex with him.

Bari, who had demanded a divorce before the attack, was permanently blinded.

Hadfi, a Moroccan, initially fled to Germany. He was arrested and sent back to France, where he was indicted for "acts of torture and barbarity leading to a permanent disability".

Prosecutor Dominique Tourette demanded that he be sentenced to 30 years in prison, two-thirds of which must be served in full, calling the defendant a "diabolic torturer".

Once his sentence is served, Hadfi will be deported and barred from ever returning to France.

His lawyer Jean-Pierre Cabanes meanwhile insisted there were extenuating circumstances.

"This is the result of a marriage that was arranged, not chosen," he said, pointing to the gulf separating his client, who came from southern Morocco, and his young wife, who had grown up in France.

Cabanes begged the jury for leniency, claiming his client's action "appeared to stem from a mental illness".

MANAGUA (EFE).

"TERROR, MISSILES, AND AL QAEDA"

March 21, 2007

International News Analysis Today
By Toby Westerman

ANALYSIS SNIPPET: "Washington is examining the very real possibility that Al Qaeda will attempt to extend its attacks to include oil supplies headed to the United States, including suppliers in North and South America. The chief of the U.S. Southern Command, Admiral James Stavridis, recently met with military representatives from Central and South America during a regional security conference held in Managua, Nicaragua. At the conference, Stavridis shared his deep concern about Al Qaeda infiltration and potential terror strikes, according to a recognized Latin American news source.

Stavridis was particularly interested in the fate of the 1,000 "Sam-7" surface-to-air missiles which are currently in the possession of Nicaragua."

Ortega seeks closer ties to Iran
DPA ^ | Feb 13, 2007

Posted on 02/15/2007 8:07:36 PM PST by Tailgunner Joe

Managua - Nicaragua's leftist president Daniel Ortega hailed Iran's Islamic revolution as comparable to Nicaragua's own in the same year, according to a letter released Monday and sent to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the 28th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Republic.

Ortega, who was inaugurated on January 10, first led the country from 1979-90 in a period marked by a civil war between his Marxist- leaning Sandinista regime and US-sponsored Contra insurgents, in which more than 50,000 people died.

'Our revolutions ... are united because we triumphed in the same glorious year of 1979, and because after decades of intense struggle and sacrifice, attained freedom and democracy for out people,' Ortega said in the letter, released by his spokeswoman and wife Rosario Murillo.

Ortega said both countries had confronted 'decisive battles by transcending the politics of imperialism, and by validating alternatives of friendship and cooperation.'

The Sandinista leader also reiterated his desire for closer ties with Iran. Ahmadinejad met with Ortega in Managua on January 13, signing bilateral trade agreements, three days after Ortega's inauguration.

'In Nicaragua, in Iran, we will strengthen our relations, expand our trade, our cooperation and promote mechanisms and instruments to make reality a new era of justice, solidarity, well being and prosperity for our people,' the letter said.

Iran on Sunday celebrated the 28th anniversary of its own revolution.

Iran’s Ahmadinejad arrives in Venezuela

Published: 01.13.07, 17:51 / Israel News

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived here Saturday at the head of a Latin American tour where he hopes to strengthen ties with leftist governments seeking to reduce Washington’s influence in the region.

Ahmadinejad was given a red-carpet welcome at Caracas’ international airport, where Vice President Jorge Rodriguez greeted him at the start of a trip that will also take him to Nicaragua for meetings with newly inaugurated President Daniel Ortega, a former Marxist guerrilla, and to Ecuador, where President-elect Rafael Correa will be sworn in Monday. "CAIR's Support Of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed & Sami Al-Arian Indicative Of Its Pro-Terror Stance"

By Beila Rabinowitz

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "March 15, 2007 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - In 2003 this writer and terror researcher Joe Kaufman published an article, "CAIR vs the FBI" which exposed how the Council on American Islamic Relations had lied about their dealings with the agency to appeal to Muslims to help find fugitive dirty bomber wannabe Adnan Shukrijumah. [source http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=9455 ]

After his capture in Pakistan in March 2003 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed told law enforcement that Shukrijumah was a key al-Qaeda operative. [source http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,436061,00.html ]

Adnan's father, Gulshair Shukrijumah aka Sheik Al Shukri, was linked to the terrorists who attempted the first WTC bombing. The explosive device was made by KSM nephew Ramzi Yusuf. The elder Shukrijumah had also been a character witness for Clement Hampton El who had been sentenced in the "Day of Terror" plot masterminded by Omar Abdel Rahman aka The Blind Sheik.

Gulshair Shukrijumah received funding from the Saudi government as a Wahhabi missionary until 2003. After Adnan was declared a fugitive he was publicly "fired" from his position as Imam of Masjid Al Hijrah in Miramar, which counter terrorism expert Paul Sperry designated as "the second most dangerous mosque in America" in his book "Infiltration."

Gulshair found a new position as Imam at the Shamshuddin Islamic Center in North Miami Beach run by family friend and spokesman Sofian Abdulaziz Zakkout, the head of AMANA [the American Muslim Society of North America].

For their part CAIR declared that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed [and the Shukrijumahs] were the real victims of the attacks and the ones in need of protection."

"Muslims offer to help 'John Does' sued by imams"
By Audrey Hudson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 21, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, a Phoenix-area physician and director of American Islamic Forum for Democracy -- a group founded in 2003 to promote moderate Muslim ideas through its Web site (www.aifdemocracy.org) -- told The Washington Times his group will raise money for legal fees for passengers if they are sued by the imams.

"It's so important that America know there are Muslims who understand who the victims are in air travel," said Dr. Jasser. "But I hope it doesn't get to that point because the backlash will be even greater when Americans see Islamists trying to punish innocent passengers reporting fears.""

"Imams' suit risks 'chill' on security"
By Audrey Hudson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 16, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Six imams who are suing an airline and an airport for removing them from a flight also have aimed the lawsuit at passengers who the imams believe reported some of their activities.

The suit filed this week in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis names as defendants "John Does" who "contacted US Airways to report the alleged suspicious behavior" of the imams before the Nov. 20 flight -- an inclusion some lawyers, who are not connected to the litigation, say will have a "chilling effect" on airline security."
