Flight attendant grounded for carrying radioactive substance (Vietnam)
Thursday, March 1, 2007

Vietnam Airlines has suspended a flight attendant who has been under investigation after she was found carrying a slightly radioactive substance last month. Customs officers of Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi found the substance on Feb 11 after noticing a suspicious-looking box in the baggage of Nguyen Thi Ninh Giang, who was to attend a flight to Vientiane.

Giang, who had worked for the national flag carrier for six months, said an acquaintance had asked her to bring the box to Laos right before she went to the airport for the flight. Giang said she had no time to check the box. VnExpress newswire reported that the small plastic cylinder box was covered with lead paper. It contained a “small technical device,” the report said. According to the Nuclear Science Institute, it contained a slightly radioactive substance which is prohibited from being carried aboard airplanes

Suspected Islamic militant arrested, explosives seized in southern Pakistan city
March 1, 2007

KARACHI, Pakistan: Police arrested a suspected member of an outlawed Pakistani militant group and seized seven kilograms (15 pounds) of explosives in a raid in the southern city of Hyderabad, an official said Thursday.

Azimud Din, 26, a suspected member of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, was arrested from a home in Sarfaraz Colony neighborhood in Hyderabad on Wednesday night, said Khalid Korai, a police officer in the city. Police found the explosives in Din's home and will investigate if he planned any terrorist attack, Korai said.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni Muslim militant group, was outlawed by Pakistani government in 2001 over allegations that it was involved in killing of Shiite Muslims, who are a minority in Pakistan. The group is also suspected of links with al-Qaida. Din was arrested following information from three other alleged Lashkar-e-Jhangvi members who were arrested in Hyderabad last month, Korai said.

"Car blast blamed on tank in trunk"
By JIM DEVINE

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SALEM – An early morning car explosion sent a local man to the hospital and damaged two nearby homes.

The explosion was caused by a leaking acetylene gas tank in the car's trunk, according to Salem fire Deputy Chief Jeff Emanuelson.

"It resembled a car bomb on first impression," Emanuelson said. "But that wasn't the case once we looked further."

Craig Feetham was getting ready for work shortly after 6 a.m. when he smelled gas while getting into his car. Knowing he had a cylinder tank of acetylene gas in his trunk, he got out of the car and popped the trunk with a keychain remote, sparking an explosion that shook the neighborhood.

Emanuelson said the force of the blast was enough to send 30-pound car parts more than 200 feet away. The explosion was heard from over a mile away and caused extensive damage to two nearby homes and sent Feetham to the hospital.

Feetham recalled hitting the wireless remote to open his trunk and then suddenly being on the ground bleeding with several layers of clothing torn to shreds."
