CPAC 2007, Day 2: Duncan Hunter wow's 'em
Duncan Hunter is on the 2008 map.
He woke up the Day 2 CPAC audience with a machine-gun like 20 minute address focused largely on the issues of our misbegotten trade policies, the war and illegal immigration.
Did not try to do too much, and he did it very well.
The result was numerous standing ovations and a huge scrum outside the ballroom with press and audience members seeking additional time with the congressman.
Mike Huckabee, who spoke about an hour later, was by contrast too cerebral and tried to cover too much, and consequently received a more subdued response.
(Huckabee was not bad though. That coverage will come tonight).
Listen to Hunter's address here.

I listened to the speech. It's mostly a replay of a standard speech he's been giving, but it's still a good one. I don't usually like to make Reagan comparisons, because they can easily be tossed around as cheap hyperbole; however, I must say that in listening to this morning's speech, it did strike me as having a very Reaganesque quality.
ping-a-ling
Thanks, Listening to it now!
Tancredo's address is right below it on the blog.
After listening to the speech, please give us the opinion of a North Dakota UPS driver on his speaking strengths and weaknesses.
I don't think any other candidate is talking about a new trade policy with China....excellent.
Looks like Hunter is making good progress- he may well position himself as the leader outside of the "Big 3" of Rudy, McCain and Romney. Making the jump to actually challinging for the nomination will be a much tougher task, however- especially with the early front-loading of huge primaries on February 5, 2008 this time around. We're likely going to wake up on February 6 with a de facto nominee.
I sure hope Hunter's name starts getting more press attention.
I think Duncan vaulted way ahead of Brownback etc. last night
YEEHAW!!!
Dang, wish I could download it to my ipod...
Excellent speech.
He just doesn't seem to have any gravitas at all.
Brownbacks at about 5% in Iowa. (he will need a lot more there)
"Glad he did well. Hopefully he will get a fair review in the press!"
That's his biggest obstacle, IMO. A guy like Rudy or McCain can get on David Letterman or Larry King virtually at will and get free publicity. They talk about them on the nightly news all the time.
I just listened to my first Hunter speech (linked above) and was very favorably impressed. The problem is I had to download a speech from a link on a message board to hear it. The number of people who will hear that fine speech probably numbers in the tens of thousands, not millions.
So I see why he has so many Freepers on his side. I remain skeptical, however, whether he will have sufficiently made a name for himself to contend seriously when February 5, 2008 rolls around and the nomination is pretty much decided. The press will have been spinning the choices as "McCain or Giuliani" for months by then.
He sticks to issues that the constitution stakes our for the federal government, and I find that refreshing.
The way I see it.
The GOP "front runners" are running from the center and it's causing the democrats to run as far to the left as they can get. I don't see our front runners ever challenging the democrats from the right. If the democrats suddenly found themselves running against a real conservative like Hunter it would throw the dems into serious disarray.
