What cute photos! May Israel's enemies hang higher than Haman! Mazel Tov!
Looks like good fun.
That's it!
Feast of Purim
Today is the Jewish feast of Purim, celebrating an incident that took place some 2,500 years ago. It is recounted in the Book of Esther.
It is a story of intrigue at the royal palace in Persia. The pagan king, angry at his queen, deposed her and put Esther, a Jewish woman in her place. Meanwhile, a powerful member of the royal court had concocted a plot to have the king in a single day kill all the Jews living in Persia. The date for this massacre was chosen by casting lots which is why Purim is sometimes called the Feast of Lots.
Esther decided to go to the king and plead for her people. In doing so she risked her life, for to enter the kings presence univited was punishable by death. She went ahead anyway and succeeded in saving her people.
Before entering the kings presences she said a prayer:
My Lord, you alone are God. Help me, who am alone and have no help but you, for I am taking my life in my hand. Be mindful of me, Or Lord. Give me courage. Put in my mouth persuasive words in the presence of the lion, and help me, who am alone and have no one but you, O Lord.
Freilichen Purim! Hope you had a nice seudah.
Chag Purim!!
Adorable grandchildren and really well done costumes!!
Chag Purim to you too! And wouldn't that be nice to dream our current Haman meets his gallows before next Purim!
Happy Purim All!
I am not Jewish, but I've always liked Purim. Most Jewish holidays -- most religious holidays of any faith, for that matter-- commemorate dark days, and carry the weight of history and duty. Purim is more light-hearted and joyful. Any people must let their hair down once in a while if they want to remain sane. To enjoy freedom and plenty and give thanks, to renew the body and spirit.
We cannot forget the darkness, but a soul needs to walk in the light every now and then. To the folks who observe Purim, I hope that you had that on this day. And to the folks who don't, I hope you had it, too. I hope you felt the sun on your face, smelled the breeze, and found a fresh reminder that life is not just an ordeal to survive, but a gift to enjoy and cherish. Happy Purim, and happy day.
The girls are both adorable. If they didn't participate in the preparations, I hope they will when they're older. The planning, the crafts, the together-time are all part of the magic. I remember a lot of special Christmas mornings, but what I remember more is the preparation, the family gathering together to plan and decorate and talk.
Your granddaughter is just beautiful! Thanks for the great pictures.
Same to you too and I couldn't agree more!
"Hopefully this will be the last Purim we will have to be concerned about Ahmedinejad!"
I missed that. Who is Haman now in Iran?
Ahmedinejad
Beautiful grandchildren, Alouette.
Our congregants at our Temple made several hundred dozen hamentaschen to sell so we could send children to summer camp. Was very successful.
The Rabbi brought in two antique groggers (noise makers) one of which had been saved by a holocaust survivor. They were made of wood and very beautifully crafted. And VERY loud too!
Well, the hamentaschen I made for family and friends are all gone now...yum...wish I had more!
As for the murderous idiot in present day Iran...isn't it ironic that the enemy has materialized in the same country so many centuries later. And, each time - Israel posed no threat to either the ancient Persians nor the modern day ones. Yet, Israel is labeled the aggressor.
It's also instructive to rememeber that Achmedinajad has been identified as one of the terrorists who invaded our embassy, took our Ambassador and diplomatic staff hostage - blindfolded them and led them through the streets.
Remember that picture?
That was an act of war....it was even considered an act of war during that first Persian empire.
Iran declared war against us in 1979 and against Israel in 2006.
Happy Purim!
What great pics! :)
