Russian air force could easily incapacitate planned U.S. missile defenses

MOSCOW: Russia's air force would be capable of easily knocking out missile defense sites the United States wants to place in Europe, news agencies quoted a top general as saying Monday in the latest bellicose remarks in response to the U.S. plans.

Lt. Gen. Igor Khvorov, who is in charge of Russia's strategic bomber force, said the installations the United States plans to deploy in Poland and the Czech Republic will be an easy target for his aircraft, Interfax and RIA-Novosti news agencies reported.

"Since missile defense elements are weakly protected, all types of our aircraft are capable of applying electronic countermeasures against them or physically destroying them," Khvorov was quoted as saying.

Since the missile defense sites are all planned to defend against Iranian missiles, there will be no reason for the Russian airplanes to mount counter-measures.

There are ten interceptors. Russia has 11 missiles, and maybe a few more. Not a big problem for a semi-superpower really. And Poland et al doesn't seem to be knuckling under to the bluff.

For lesser states such as Iran, it's a problem.

If they are so easy to take out then why worry about them at all?

No need for the Russians to crap their panties.

The Russian military looks good as long as they don't run out of paint.

LOL. It was a good joke once but it is no longer valid. Russia makes good profit on arms sale to India, Iran, China, Syria and hell knows who else. And they are investing it in their military so results will be soon to be seen. As long as surplus money from high prices on oil and natural gas feeds Russia it can only keep getting stronger and more competitive oriented.

Didnt the ruskies just announce two new bombers going into production?

I have no doubt we could whoop their airforce, but we could never beat them on the ground. They fight like the mongols. Hordes of them just keep coming. You'd be out of ammo before you killed them all.

Other than nuking them (and us) out of existence we would be hard pressed to stop them from moving on Europe. But who would want to take over France... Yuck.

From the military history perspective it seems only simple, practical things work inside Russian interior. This concerns extreme weather conditions mostly, but also the vastness of the country areas behind Ural being their "dark hour" reservoire. To me Germans went to Russia unprepared just like sheep into the slaughterhouse, exactly like Napoleon with his army did before. Of all nations only the Poles and Mongols know who to capture Moscow. But only the Mongols know how to stay there for centuries. And this is the key to the Russian psyche.

The Russians are paranoid. They always have been.

I don't think our government appreciates that enough.

Once again; the Russian military is pounding it's chests and warning "we are great, we are invincible" just like they did from 1960 to 1989. I guess that is how the Generals keep their jobs.

Don't get deluded. It's not paranoia - it's simply internal politics. Putin needs a reason to play rough with the States. Most of Russians waited for that moment impatiently since USSR broke up.

I my opinion you're absolutely right. It's all about Generals being "so impotent"... egh, sorry I mean "important".
