The Weekly Standard's Noemie Emery looks at a subject we've written a lot about over the past few weeks: social conservatives who are considering backing Rudy Giuliani for president despite his disagreeing with them on abortion. Emery argues that Republicans are "making a deal":
The deal in the works has been carefully crafted to make sure that no one loses too much. Conservatives would be getting a pro-choice nominee, but one who would not push a pro-choice agenda, and one who would give them (as far as presidents can be sure in these matters) the kind of judges they long for. Giuliani would not be required to renounce his beliefs, merely to appoint the right kind of judges and to remain more or less neutral in a policy area in which, to be honest, he has never shown that much interest.
In fact, as Emery points out elsewhere, "aside from the appointing of judges, and some tinkering with executive orders," there is little the president can do about abortion. As long as the Supreme Court insists that abortion is a constitutional right, there is little Congress or the state legislatures can do either. If President Giuliani makes good on his promise to nominate judges, and especially high court justices, who are inclined to overturn Roe v. Wade, his pro-life supporters will have received almost everything substantive that they could have asked for.
How likely is Roe to be overturned? There's no way to know, but we can speculate. Currently seven of the nine justices have taken a position on the subject: five have upheld the putative constitutional right to abortion, while two have said they would overturn it

Rudy ping
The burning question for me is: is he a man of honor? Or will he throw us overboard the first chance he gets?
Some one needs to show all of the Conservatives he has appointed to anything including dog catcher in the past before I would believe him!
Abortion isn't the only social issue that matters. There's gay "rights," gun rights, and immigration (if you count that), among other things. Immigration is probably the biggie in terms of the president being likely to take action on it.
There's Conservatives in New York?
There is no need to wait to overturn Roe vs Wade. Legislation is already pending in Congress that'll sidestep the atrocious ruling and give our unborn the protection it deserves.
I haven't seen people questioning whether Rudy is a straight shooter or not. It seems his word is good as far as I've heard.
That Rudy appointed?
Don't hold your breath waiting for this Dumbocrap congers to pass any such legislation.
I suspect you wouldn't believe him no matter what evidence was put before you.

Yes. He tells it like it is, and never hedges. I watched him closely the whole time he was mayor of New York, and I think that was always true.
When the press confronted him, he never backed down or hedged, and they confronted him every day. When he said he would attend the funeral of every cop or fireman killed in the line of duty, he kept his word. When he said he would stand behind cops who had to shoot black criminals in the course of duty, he stood by them, despite nationwide attacks on him.
This became an issue in the early days of the campaign against Hillary for the senate, and he did not back down, although the NY Times and the major networks attacked him viciously every day as a racist and a supporter of police brutality.
If he makes a promise, it's a good bet he will keep it.
There's a better chance of Congress passing it than Rudy nonminating originalist judges. There are lots of Blue Dog Democrats who lean pro-life, and Rudy would be pressured to sign such legislation unless he wants to be a one-term President.
So you can not name even one! LOL
How about the rest house set up for the real 911 heroes working to clear and find people in the rubble, that his appointed goons took over and turned into their play pen?
and the 60 senate votes, how do we get those?
did you mean to reply to me? i don't know what relevance that has to my comment.
Sunsong, if Huntsville won't believe evidence, why don't you provide it and expose his obstinance? Or do you simply not have any? And more importantly, if that's the case: do you simply not care that the evidence doesn't exist?
Nah. Yours was just the last post when I replied. Happens all the time. Hope you're OK.
Dream on, Rutards, dream on...
