First Review of Order of the Phoenix, from Chicago Screening (Spoiler Alert)
The Leaky Cauldron ^ | 3/6/2007

Posted on 03/06/2007 5:56:17 AM PST by CholeraJoe

We have for you the first complete review and set of details from an early screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that took place in Chicago. (There is also a review at Ain't It Cool News here.) A review is below, followed by a VERY long and VERY detailed set of answers to questions that our reviewer has been giving in the comments. They are very spoiler-heavy.

Another reader noted that the movie looked like it had about 70 percent of special effects finished, and called it by far her favorite HP film. Reader Carlos's review is below, and he's been answering questions in the comments (and we'll keep adding his answers to this massive list of details). He gives the movie 3.5 stars and notes it's currently about 2:30; highlights, he says, include Evanna Lynch's turn as Luna and Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix. (If you went to the screening and want to share, email us!)

Please be reminded that SPOILERS abound in this description (not too many, actually, but we warn you just in case)...if you don't mind that, continue reading... (and if you're on the text only site, better close the window now).

No locket?! I am glad they changed the dementors. They were not as I envisioned them at all in PoA. Also glad they gave the twins their due in this film. They had me in hysterics in the book.

Excellent!! I like that the reviewer says "fans will be less disappointed" with this movie.

Looking forward to Luna, Kreacher, and the DD/Voldy fight.

Hurry, July!

Actually, I would like to know something about the spoilers.

Is there anything that might spoil the movie for someone that has read the book? (And I only read it once, shame on me.) Major changes or giving away any sort of technical/visual "surprise" or something of that nature?

Just wondering. Thanks.

Thanks, Retro!

July is going to be exciting - OotP movie and final book - Potter overload mode.

BTW, just saw that Dan Radcliffe signed on for the rest of the movies.

Like we haven't read the book 5 times... :)

I know, it's ridiculous, isn't it? I have been reading the literary alchemy thing at http://www.hogwartsprofessor.com, and it is very enlightening. Over my head, but enlightening.

Thanks! My chief complaint of the movies is how BAD the current "Dumbledore" is. He was a raving lunatic in GOF and worse in the previous flick. He is NO RICHARD HARRIS by any means and altered the very character of the movies with his abysmal portrayal of this key character.

The "Azkaban" flick was directed poorly in comparison with the first two movies, which were "masterful" in the portrayal of the feeling of the books.

GOF was a step up. A lot of material to cover in two hours.

If they can just smooth out the telling of the story without chopping it to piece they'll do fine.

According to the review, no major changes and nothing in the movie that's not in the book. They do actually show the Death Eaters breaking out of Azkaban, though.

By spoiler, do you mean they tell you how it ends?

- Dumbledore seems to be more like he is in the books (says Carlos)

That could carry the "feel" of the movie a long way.

Carlos (the guy who saw the movie) says "Dumbledore seems to be more like he is in the books." Thank God!

Hopefully Michael Gambon finally read the books.
