Newt Gingrich, a former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will be Liberty University’s graduation speaker on May 19.
Gingrich, 63, confirmed he would be the speaker during a telephone conversation with the Rev. Jerry Falwell on Tuesday.
“Newt is a longtime friend of mine,” Falwell said. “He is also one of the brightest men I know in public life today.”
Falwell said Gingrich will be speaking on “Rediscovering God In America,” which just happens to be the title of Gingrich’s new book.
It will be the second time Gingrich has been the school’s commencement speaker. He previously spoke at LU’s graduation in 1991.
In some conservative circles, Gingrich’s name is being bandied about as a possible contender for the Republican presidential nomination.
Conservatives have complained that none of the declared Republican presidential contenders have the consistent conservative pedigree they are seeking in a presidential candidate.
Falwell said Gingrich will likely “throw his hat into the ring” sometime this summer.

Newt is certainly becoming more visible and I like a lot of what he says. He would, IMHO, do well so stay away from Falwell.

Like him or not, Falwell represents a constituency that cannot be ignored.

"He would do well...to stay away from Falwell."
That would apply to anybody who wishes to be taken seriously.

My opinion, too, but it looks like they aren't too close..
From Article: Falwell said Gingrich will likely throw his hat into the ring sometime this summer.
Either he knows something we don't, or he hasn't been listening to any of Newt's many interviews where he's said time and again that he isn't declaring one way or the other until September 27.

Good for Newt and Jerry. Its a big improvement over that other speaker Jerry had down to Liberty U. That senator from Arizona.

Another reason to vote against Newt... pandering to the hate-filled Jerry Falwell.

He's campaigning without campaigning. All of the recent polls, and straw polls, clearly show him to be a contender, and likely the #2 contender overall.
I think that he'd fill a void many Conservatives are looking for. Of course, there will be some to whom there is simply nobody good enough but their specific candidate - but I think most folks who want a Conservative will find a home backing Gingrich.
