Kerry's Swift Retribution (moves to bork swiftboat doner)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 7, 2007

The country long ago moved beyond John Kerry's Presidential ambitions, but the Senator, as he seems never to tire of reminding us, has not. Now Mr. Kerry's throbbing grievances jeopardize President Bush's nominee for U.S. Ambassador to Belgium.

Last week Sam Fox, a 77-year-old St. Louis businessman, sat before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for a confirmation hearing widely expected to be uncontroversial. But in the 2004 campaign, Mr. Fox gave $50,000 to the Kerry opposition group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

After some desultory questioning about "the image of America in Europe," Mr. Kerry solicited Mr. Fox's opinions as to "the politics of personal destruction" -- to which Mr. Fox replied, "Senator, you're a hero." Not good enough. Mr. Kerry launched into a harangue about 527 committees (the Swift Boaters were one of those) and other affronts to his station in life, none of which were germane to Mr. Fox's qualifications to serve.

Mr. Kerry: "Do you think this should matter to me?" Mr. Fox: "I'm sorry?" Mr. Kerry: "Do you think this should matter to me?" Mr. Fox: "Yes, I do, I do." Mr. Kerry: "Do you think it should matter to everybody here, as a Senator?"

Mr. Fox, a major donor to Republican campaigns, says he gives generously to a variety of causes, most of them philanthropic, and doesn't recall the reasoning behind his Swift Boat donation. We can assume it was to defeat Mr. Kerry, though Mr. Fox also pointed out, sensibly enough, that 527s are creatures of contemporary politics: "That's the world we live in."

That's an insight Mr. Kerry's Democratic colleagues, who in solidarity may block Mr. Fox's appointment in a vote on Friday, would do well to remember. The Democrats are not without their own free-range advocacy groups, such as MoveOn.org.

He should have challenged Kerry. He had nothing to lose, this A-hole was voting against him the whole time.

I'll bring the Lager.

The utterly worthless Senator, living off Republican money, via his trashy wife, THeinzKerry, is disgusting. He is not a hero, he's a fraud with the name traitor more applicable than any other. My memory is quite clear picturing the gawky Senator running down the Senate steps right after the plane hit the Pentagon, he was alone and the first one out the door, cowardly, self-serving and helping no one but his boney butt to, what he assumed at the time, an attack on the Nation's capital. I will never forget that scene although I never saw it run again on the cables or networks. Hero? Give me a break, he's a coward.

This guy is a republican donor and appointed to be ambassador to belgium.

This is done all the time and most of the republicans will be replaced by the next president.

It is sort of like an honorary degree for the big wigs.

We do this only for a few nice countries like switzerland, belgium, norway, etc.

No idea where, possibly NewsMaxx, but I saw an article where one of the organization involved in the Swift Boat exposure campaign has to pay 750,000. in fines.

Anyone else see that? I looked for it here but didn't see it.

Why are we appointing 77 year-olds as ambassadors?

Wouldn't you think that the ambassadorship to Belgium is largely ceremonial?

To hell with Sam Fox....calling Kerry a " hero', proves he's not right for the position of AMB. !What a weasel.

Mr. Kerry: "Do you think this should matter to me?"

Here's the proper response:

Mr. Fox: "Well, Mr. Senator, if it does matter to you, then I see you have three choices. You can vote to confirm me, you can recuse yourself, or you can abuse the power of your office to commit an act of personal revenge. It is simply beyond your ability to separate your legitimate reservations, whatever they may be, from your personal grievances. You cannot cast an impartial vote against me."

But no, the man he dropped 50 large to discredit is a "hero".
