Just weeks after taking his seat in the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama was involved in two questionable business deals, buying stock in companies whose backers included major donors to his political campaigns.
In February 2005, Obama bought about $5,000 worth of stock in AVI BioPharma, a drug company working to develop a medicine to treat avian flu victims, according to Senate disclosure statements cited by the New York Times.
Less than two weeks later, Sen. Obama began pushing for an increase in federal financing to fight avian flu, a move that eventually helped lead to the Senates approval of a $3.8 billion appropriation to fight the flu.

Sounds like the NYT is digging up dirt to help Hitlery.
Looks like Hillary's machine is beginning to worry about 'bama, and are starting to squeeze out the **** about him.
Hillary doesn't have much standing to comment on this. Maybe that won't stop her, she has enough gall.
Maybe Hillary is attempting to prove that, since Obama didn't make as much money as SHE did in the market, that SHE'S better qualified to run things...
Anyone still questioning Dirty Harry's deals?
well... I WOULD rather see Hillary get the nomination...
pass the popcorn.
I'm shocked, shocked that a politician from Illinois would be involved in a shady financial deal. /sarc
Isn't She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named from Illinois?
I care more about $3.8 billion appropriation to fight the flu that doesn't really exist then a $5000 stock investment. $3.8 billion could have helped a lot of vets at Walter Reed, what the hell?
He should reply with a mention of Hillary Clinton's cattle futures fiasco.
Silly Rabbit. This scandal is not about a Conservative Republican. No one cares about this.
She's an empty pantsuit. IMO
Cattle futures anyone?
The AJC also printed this. Helping hillary? That was my first guess, too.
The New York Times will never publicize it, but Obama had a similar conflict of interest earlier, while he was a state legislator. He voted four times against an infant born alive protection act, making it illegal for hospitals to kill babies who are born alive.
It turns out that his wonderful and supportive Church of Christ in Chicago runs such a hospital, where babies are sometimes born alive and then disposed of.
Since his pastor was a major political supporter and the church connection is important in arguing that he is not a Muslim, Obama was merely returning the favor.
