Free Republic is turning into a fringy fever swamp again.

It appears to me that there are fewer posts of articles from reputable news sites and more from marginal and special-interest sources.

Increasingly any post which does not hew to the wingnut lineis met with flaming.

In short, the hard-right ideologues have made life so miserable for center-right posters that they have decided that Free Republic no longer represents them.

More and more Republicans have decided that the wild-eyed lunatic fringe is doing more harm than good to the conservative cause.

I am not alone in this opinion.

I have discussed it with other Freepers who were formerly prolific posters of articles but who now seldom do so.

We are tired of the abuse so we have decided that we aren't going to stay where we aren't wanted.

If you think I'm exaggerating, just post an article favorable to President Bush and see the response.

Another good comment from a guy who has been around long enough to know.

You're 100% correct.

How many kook threads do we have to see every day claiming that President Bush is preparing to turn control of the U.S. over to Mexico?

As you said, you are not alone. Look at post #20 for validation of your position.

Yep. A lot of the thoughtful veteran posters who contributed so much to a well-reasoned back and forth don't show up much anymore. It's not the same place it used to be. A lot more bitterness, a lot less intellect. It's very sad.

I have to agree with your post #115. In California we are losing so much ground because unelectable candidates are put up by the Republican party. We need redistricting and open primaries - otherwise it is just the fringe and often inept candidates that win the primary but lose out in the general.

I've seen your posting history. To you, anyone more conservative than that dork Michael Medved is "hard-right" to you.

I couldn't agree with you more. And the majority of the really strident, annoying posters seem to have the most recent sign up dates.

The site is becoming a victim of its own success.
