U.S. missile shield could split Europe: Chirac

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. plans to base a missile defense system in eastern Europe could reopen old divisions on the continent, French President Jacques Chirac said on Friday.

The United States wants to base the system in Poland and the Czech Republic so that any missiles fired by what it calls "rogue states" such as Iran and North Korea can be shot down.

"We should be very careful not to head toward new lines of division in Europe and a return to an out-dated order," Chirac told a news conference after a summit of EU leaders in Brussels.

"It raises a number of questions on which we should reflect at length," he added.

The plan has already triggered friction among NATO allies. The Czech Republic has rejected criticism of talks with the United States over its possible participation after Luxembourg said it threatened to cause new tensions with Russia.

An opinion poll last week showed nearly two-thirds of Czechs opposed hosting the radar system.

Perhaps we should let Iran and North Korea launch a few nukes and then see if they change their minds.

Yes, let's stipulate that France is not participating and no interceptors will be launched at missiles heading for France.

It will be split by the missiles that reach their target and those that don't.

France is counter-proposing their white flag shield for Eastern Europe.

If France doesn't like how we are building a missile shield, they should build their own.

We are building it to protect our own interests which happen to coincide with the interests of many of our allies.

However, if France isn't happy with how we protect our interests, then they should shut up and build their own.

And when are we going to kick the useless, whiny French out of NATO?

An opinion poll last week showed nearly two-thirds of Czechs opposed hosting the radar system.

There once was a little red hen who lived on a farm. The hen's friends were a little black dog, a big orange cat, and a little yellow goose. One day, the red hen found some grains of wheat. "I can make bread from this," thought the red hen.

The little red hen asked, "Who will help me plant the wheat?"

"Not I," said the little black dog.
"Not I," said the big orange cat.
"Not I," said the little yellow goose.

"Then I will do it myself," said the little red hen. And she planted the wheat without any help at all.

The little red hen asked, "Who will help me cut the wheat?"

"Not I," said the little black dog.
"Not I," said the big orange cat.
"Not I," said the little yellow goose.

"Then I will do it myself," said the little red hen. And she cut the wheat without any help at all.

The tired little red hen asked, "Who will help me take the wheat to the mill and grind it into flour?"

"Not I," said the little black dog.
"Not I," said the big orange cat.
"Not I," said the little yellow goose.

"Then I will do it myself," said the tired little red hen. So she took the wheat to the mill and ground it into flour without any help at all.

The very, very tired little red hen asked, "Who will help me bake the bread?"

"Not I," said the little black dog.
"Not I," said the big orange cat.
"Not I," said the little yellow goose.

"Then I will do it myself," said the very, very tired little red hen. And she baked the bread without any help at all.

The hot, fresh bread smelled very good. The little red hen asked, "Now, who will help me eat this bread?"

"I will!" said the little black dog.
"I will!" said the big orange cat.
"I will!" said the little yellow goose.

"No, you won't! I will do it myself!" yelled the little red hen. And she ate the bread without any help at all.

The End

Let them ungrateful Czechs die in a fiery nuclear holocaust.

As usual, its a self-serving comment made by someone who wants to use it as an issue to divide Europe - pro or con to the U.S. Coming from France, were we supposed to expect anything else? No.

I bet a thousand quadloops (or whatever their money is) that the czechs love the idea of a missile shield - its just that the pollsters don't.

Chirac is instead proposing that all of Europe unite as one under the Islamic Caliphate. Hey, at least they won't be divided.

"when are we going to kick the useless, whiny French out of NATO?"

France pulled out of NATO's military command back in the '60s, under DeGaulle, but they are still part of NATO's "political" structure...... which means we have allowed the absurd situation in which the Vichy whiners have a strong say in NATO while contributing absolutely nothing to the alliance's force structure.... not to mention that in recent years their thrust has been to develop an entirely separate "rapid reaction" force for the EU, which in an era of grossly inadequate military spending in the EU means that NATO will be even weaker. France is a cancer in the bowels of the western alliance.

Let's keep in mind that France is allied with the terrorists.

France has been playing footsie with the Muslims for about 500 years.

A gram of prevention is worth many kilograms of regret. If the aggressor is convinced that his expensive missiles will not get through, he is less likely to launch or build them.
