"Representation and simulation have taken the place of what we used to call reality. We live instead with media-generated fictions. In 1991, in his essay, The Gulf War Did Not Take Place, he argued that in essence the war was a TV show and a symbolic gesture. The real conflict took place in the media of the West and didn't matter outside that electronic arena.

I would have to say, this is not an entirely unreasonable description of what does go on. But it is predicated on the notion that reality will not suddenly reappear, as it is apt to do.

Did Baudrillard die, or merely his similacrum? Is death real? Is life real? Did someone using the name or sign of "Baudrillard" actually exist? Consult Heidegger for the answers.

...were among the most prominent members of the platoon of French imperialist intellectuals who landed on the shores of North America and conquered a whole continent. They set up base camps on elite college campuses and soon began enlisting local recruits for their army of postmodernists, post-structuralists, post-Marxists and full-time professional obscurantists. They became an all-consuming vogue.

How funny, people wrapped up in their own little worlds. I've never even heard of these clowns, yet the language above would make one believe they had taken over the whole world. Never heard of the idiot.

In some circles, those who didn't imitate the French stars were considered eccentric.

Oh no, don't consider me eccentric! Such punishment, oooh I can't stand the pain.

Soon it was impossible to get through Yale without encountering them,...

Oh, I see now, it's one of those super rich play pens for the idly wealthy. So rarefied as to be sterile, while they sadly believe themselves to be virile and striking great blows. Oh well, just don't go out into the real world and get a job, that first step is a doosy!

'French intellectual'. What a contradiction of terms...

Most ultra-leftists are the ultimate cynics. They don't believe in anything except taking power and using/abusing it. Mao and Stalin are their ideological friends. This French leftist geek sounds like a typical one.
