JF-17s welcomed at Kamra

By Our Correspondent

ATTOCK, March 12: It was a historic day for Pakistan when two FJ-17 Thunder fighter aircraft arrived from China at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra on Monday. An arrival ceremony for the two aircraft, jointly manufactured by Pakistani and Chinese engineers, was held with a great joy.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed, was chief guest on the occasion.

Senior officers of the Pakistan Air Force and members of the Chinese delegation attended the ceremony.

The air chief inspected JF-17 Thunder aircraft and met with pilots, engineers and technicians.

He appreciated their hard work and devotion for translating a dream into reality.

The JF-17 Thunder aircraft will have its first public appearance in Islamabad on March 23, during flypast of the National Day Joint Services Parade.

The aircraft is an advanced multi-role light combat aircraft jointly invested and developed by China and Pakistan.

It is a key strategic project between the two countries in the military field.

The induction of Thunder JF-17 manufacturing project will be further enhanced at the international level.

What are those things in front of the cockpit? Side view mirrors?

Looks like a Saab Viggen.....or a little bit like a small Kfir.

What's the weapon suite? Looks like a pair of Ki-13/AA-2 "Atoll," but I don't recognize the larger missiles.

Are the Chinese producing this aircraft for the PLAAF as well? It would seem to be in the F-16/MiG-29 class.

Sort of reads like something out of the society pages

It's in the same class as the (now dead) F-20 TigerShark or the Indian LCA.It's meant as a replacement for the Mig-21/Mirage-3 & F-5 class fighters & is not in the same class as the F-16/Mig-29.It's weapons suite will probably be the Chinese SD-10 medium range AAMs & their PL-9 missiles. The Pakis may also try to tweak their sidewinders to it.It's not clear whether the PLAAF is interested in the type & no firm evidence of interest is yet to be seen.

If you mean fighters-they have upgraded Mig-21s,Mig-27,Jaguars,Mirage-2000s & Mig-29(both due for major upgrades) & the SU-30 fighter bomber.Other than the much talked about 126 jet contract, additional Mirage-2005 jetsmaybe purchased & a indegnious aircraft called the 'Tejas' is being developed.

Honestly, it looks like the unfortunate offspring of a Mig-21 Father and F-5 Mother.

Poor thing...never had a chance.

Su-30s, MiG 27 & 29s, Mirage 2000 provide the backbone of the Indian fleet.

Maybe-it had initial American help from Grumman, which ended with Tiannammen.

It need not be the best in the world-There are still thousands of Mig-21/23s & Mirage-3s in service. This fighter is a pretty neat replacement for such.If it develops properly,it would probably be one of the biggest selling fighters of the next 20 years.

"If it develops properly,it would probably be one of the biggest selling fighters of the next 20 years."

And in doing so, quite possibly becoming the World's most shot down fighter.
