1998 may have been a peak closely followed or surpassed say some by 2005 but the average temp. over consecutive years continues to climb.
There is no "consensus" about the small statistical variance between 1998 and 2005, because there is good enough scientists who will side with either year.
But, regardless, it either cooled in some years (some believe) or remained flat in some years (others believe) but for the years 1999 to 2005, almost a decade, the global average did not exceed a peak previously held in 1998. Meanwhile, CO2 continued to pile up. Apparently with not much affect overall.
The near flat-line overall average from 1998 to 2005, irrespective of the little ups and downs in between, do not point, definitively, to a continuing climb of any great magnitude and are completely within prior norms in the data of prior earth warming cycles, needing no man-made C02 to produce them.
The rest is CO2 speculation and religious-scientific orthodoxy, not science.
