WASHINGTON -- Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confessed to cutting off the head of American journalist Daniel Pearl, as well as the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a revised transcript of a statement released by the U.S. military.
"I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan," Mohammed is quoted as saying in a transcript of a military hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that was released Thursday by the Pentagon.
In addition to the terrorist attacks and Pearl's death, Muhammed claimed responsibility for at least 30 other al-Qaida attacks or plots. They ranged from the 1993 attack at the World Trade Center to the attempt by would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes.
"I was responsible for the 9/11 operation, from A to Z," an interpreter read from Muhammad's statement to the Combatant Status Review Tribunal on March 10 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
In the statement he pledged his allegiance to Osama bin Laden and finished with an admission to trying to destroy an American oil company in Indonesia owned by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
He offered a confession to "managing and following up on the Cell for the Production of Biological Weapons, such as anthrax and others, and following up on Dirty Bomb Operations on American soil."
He also named four other skyscrapers that were supposed to be destroyed in a "second wave" of attacks after Sept. 11. They were the Library Tower in Los Angeles, the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Plaza Bank in Seattle and the Empire State Building in New York City.
Mohammed also said he plotted attacks that were never carried out against then-President Bill Clinton, former President Jimmy Carter and the late Pope John Paul II.
"I shared responsibility for the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II while he was visiting the Philippines," Muhammad also said in the transcript.
Muhammad's lengthy closing oral statement began with a pledge to Allah in Arabic followed by a refusal to take an oath as part of the tribunal. He explained that he was not lying, but that his religious beliefs prevented him taking the oath and thereby accepting, at least in part, American law and its constitution.
Muhammad went on to say that he was not trying to make himself out to be a hero, but an enemy of America.
He drew a comparison between al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and George Washington, both fighting for independence, and said that the term terrorist is "deceiving." He said that during the Revolutionary War, Washington would have been considered a terrorist by the British.
Muhammad said he did not like to kill people, especially children.
"I don't like to kill people. I feel very sorry they been killed kids in 9/11," Muhammad said in broken English. But, he said, their deaths are part of the "language" of war.
He closed by stating that war is part of life and that it will never stop.

Because they, even if they were soft on terrorism, they still were presidents of the US...the "Great Satan".
Iraqi Abdul Rahman Yasin, who mixed the chemicals used in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, was sheltered after the attack by Saddam's government.
That alone is enough of a Saddam-Al Qaeda link to justify the war in Iraq many times over, IMHO.

Mohammed: Wait a minute, I left out an atrocity!
He may or may not be trying to take the heat off other people by admitting to these various plots. But it wouldn't be a surprise if he did kill Daniel Perle. If I'm not mistaken, he was captured in the city where Perle was killed.
The man has a very different understanding of the world than you or I do.
That should not make you suspicious at all. We all know that the terrorists think that Clinton and Carter were weak for their refusal to confront the terrorism. Because of their weakness, the terrorist kept stepping up the extent of the attacks in an effort to provoke some reaction.
