Then why did the planes have to turn around in mid flight?

Because they lost communications as well -- according to the report. Prudent thing to do was go back to Hawaii.

I don't know. Perhaps modern pilots do not know how to use sextants? (Man, you have to take me with lots of salt. Don't take me seriously or you will go nuts.)

Maybe they need to re-incorporate some old school methods.

IIRC, even the XB-70 had a 'sky portal' for star based navigation, and it was a M3+ Inter-Continental Bomber. I would guess its sextant was a module you calibrated, but then maybe not. That is the American way you know!
