AMMAN, Jordan - Jordan's military court on Thursday sentenced to death four Iraqi al-Qaida militants charged with terror attacks on Jordanians in Iraq. Of the four, only one is in custody while the other three remain at large and were tried in absentia.

The court also handed down sentences to 10 others in the case — also at large and believed to be in hiding in Iraq — ranging from 15 years in jail with hard labor to life imprisonment.

The group's alleged mastermind, Ziad Khalaf Raja al-Karbouly, was charged with leading the group of 14 in plotting attacks on trucks with Jordanian license plates on Iraqi roads to murder those on board.

As the military judge read the verdict in the Amman courtroom on Thursday, al-Karbouly shouted: "God is our leader and America is your leader." Al-Karbouly can appeal the verdict.

Arrested inside Jordan in May 2006 after he was apparently lured into a trap set by Jordanian intelligence, al-Karbouly confessed later that month on television to killing Jordanian truck driver Khalid al-Dessouki in Iraq. But when his trial opened last September, al-Karbouly pleaded innocent.

In the broadcast, he also claimed to be a member of the terror group al-Qaida in Iraq, at the time led by Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. However, the group later released a statement denying al-Karbouly was a member.

Beside al-Karbouly, other suspects sentenced to death included his brother Ayad al-Karbouly, Nabhan al-Abbasi and Younis al-Ramlawi.

Three other suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment and seven to 15 years in jail with hard labor. The militants also were found guilty of belonging to al-Qaida in Iraq and of possession of illegal arms.

During a hearing last November, Ziad Khalaf Raja al-Karbouly praised Osama Bin Laden and called Jordan's King Abdullah II an infidel.

At the time, he told the court that he was "proud of being a member of al-Qaida and a soldier for Osama Bin Laden," and added that, "We in al-Qaida will continue our holy war and our reward will be the dear virgins of heaven."

His reward should be to be flogged with swine entrails just prior to dropping the last 5 ft.
