Britain's HP sauce leaves bad taste

LONDON (AP) More than 100 years of British tradition came to an end yesterday as the final bottle of HP brown sauce - a popular alternative to ketchup - rolled off a production line at a factory in central England.

HP's U.S. owner, H.J. Heinz, stuck by plans to switch production of the sauce to the Netherlands to save money, despite a high-profile campaign to keep it in Britain that saw protests outside the U.S. Embassy and lawmakers brandishing bottles of the condiment in the House of Commons.

A staple that is smothered over everything from fish and chips to the traditional English fry-up breakfast of sausages, bacon, baked beans and eggs, its advertising slogan proudly proclaims it is "The Official Sauce of Great Britain." Its distinctive tall bottle carries a picture of the Houses of Parliament on a blue and red label - an image that some protesters say is no longer appropriate.

The decision to close the Aston, Birmingham, plant in favor of a new factory in Elst, in the Netherlands, will also cost 120 jobs. There was immediate and strong opposition when Heinz announced its plan last August.

It somewhat resembles stuffed intestines (pig intestines otherwise known as chitterlings)

Those wacky foreigners. In Alabama the correct pronunciation is: chitlin's

My suspicion is that Heinz have only kept it going to bolster those cherished American myths about English food...

Which myths? I'll admit I need to get out of the house more.

I love the stuff. I think (IMHO) that it's much better than A1 although a great steak doesn't need any sauce.

It's very similar to A1 sauce or Heinz 57. It's a decent sauce. Goes well on meat.

Blutwurst (blood sausage).

Blood sausage is eaten all over Europe. It is extremely popular in the UK and Ireland (it is called Black Pudding).

but charge you about 25 cents for a little sachet of ketchup..

Been living in the UK for almost 8 years. Never once paid for ketchup although I did pay for it in a German McDonalds.

I know a lot of folks that swear by mountain oysters...

I've never tried them...and don't plan on it either.

I've "worked" bull calves....and to just see that bit "operation"...is enough for me to not want them.

The guy that marketed W ketchup actually lives downstairs from me. He had to close up shop because someone previously trademarked the letter "W" in connection with condiments.

I need to learn trademark law. It's a goldmine, apparently.
