As an occasional aside certainly there is nothing wrong with this. Many a teacher will thrown in an obiter dicta into a class discussion if only to kill time.

Probably too much. It still depends on the content of the power point. If it goes against the curriculum then I wonder if he intended to rebut something in it. More likely an administrator was intimidated by an indignant parent. School administrators are the most political persons in the world.
