FBI agents Monday arrested a man -- wanted in connection with the death of a police officer in Mexico -- in Huntington Park, according to the FBI.
The FBI turned Odilon Carlos, also known as Odilon Carlos-Marquez, 27, over to Mexican officials.
The FBI's Fugitive Task Force found Carlos at his girlfriend's residence in Huntington Park, said Laura Eimiller of the FBI.
Carlos allegedly fired an Uzi 9mm machine gun at three Zacatecas municipal police officers in Mexico on Dec. 28, Eimiller said. One of them died and the others sustained serious injuries.
Mexican authorities had previously used helicopters and dogs to search for Carlos in the mountains near Zacatecas, but did not find him, according to the FBI.
FBI agents in Guadalajara, Jalisco received a tip this month that Carlos had illegally returned to the United States and was living in the Los Angeles area.
Carlos, a convicted felon, had been deported from the United States in 2005.
Officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement joined the FBI in returning Carlos to Mexican authorities Tuesday at San Ysidro.
"This capture should send a message to fugitives from justice that crossing the U.S.-Mexican border does not provide sanctuary," said J. Stephen Tidwell, assistant director in charge of the FBI in Los Angeles. "The FBI has and will continue to work jointly with Mexico and other foreign governments, and our partners in the United States, to apprehend violent criminals whose capture serves the interests of law-abiding citizens in any country."
"Since January of last year, ICE's Los Angeles fugitive operations teams have taken custody of 39 foreign nationals who were being sought in their native countries for serious crimes, including rape and murder," said Jim Hayes, director of ICE's Los Angeles Field Office.
At least we'll do the right thing...returning the bad guy. More than we can hope for from the Mexicans when it comes to pursuing justice here in the US.
Ahhh, but that was only at the request of the Mexican government. Afterall, they are in charge of our immigration laws now.
This sounds like our government doing the right thing for once.
