Sen. John Kerry plans to say at a Senate hearing today that the system that should allow fans easy access to televised baseball games from multiple markets "is not working."
In a statement to be delivered to the Senate Commerce Committee, the Massachusetts Democrat expressed reservations about a $700 million deal that could make Major League Baseball's Extra Innings package - which allows fans to watch out-of-market games - the exclusive property of the DirecTV satellite service.
Kerry said he was concerned about "exclusive carriage deals in the sports industry" and that he hoped the Senate could do something about them.

Has it been reduced to this, once so great a presidential candidate? That all you can advocate for is baseball?
This might be the only time I ever agree with John Kerry about anything.
Say it ain't so!
It's because following his latest slam of the troops, even Democrats shun him. And despising only the middle class more than they do Kerry, they assigned him to the Small Business Committeee. He, no doubt, wakes up every morning saying, "God, how I hate my life!"
"Universal baseball coverage?"
"that French Faggot dosent like baseball....and he sure dosent like football."
Now, now, there is an explanation for that. In France football is soccer, his hands are his feet, his feet are in his mouth, his flips are in his flops.
I have had DirecTV for almost two years and I love it. Now I love it even more because John Effing Kerry hates it. I win!
Hey Kerry, the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers are only two examples that Senators do not belong in Major League Baseball. Butt the hell out and let the market decide.
J Forbes Kerry has been to every famous Red Sox game in History. Fisk's home run in game 6, Buckner ball through the legs in 86, Ted Williams last at bat, the first Red Sox WS in 1901, The change of the name from the Bean Eaters to the Pilgrims in 1892. These memories are all seared, SEARED in his mind.
Manny Ortiz is his favorite player.
Yeah, just ask Manny Ortiz!
This must be one of the many important things he has to do as a senator - like destroy the president and insult our troops.
Egads! This man is so irrelevent!
I absolutely hate the TV coverage of Major League Baseball. In North Carolina, we get the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox almost every week. No choices, we get what is shoved at us by the big markets. If we want to see anyone else, we have to subscribe to an expensive DirecTV package.
So now we have a new human right: the right of access to televised sporting events without changing TV services.
Some TV services carry channels that mine does not. I guess Kerry should concern himself and congress with that deep injustice also.
I thought David Ramirez was his favorite??
Spreading out the Major League Baseball to competition would be better than making it exclusive to DirecTV, don't you think?
