poll: SOLID MAJORITY FAVORS CONGRESSIONAL TROOP DEADLINE
Pew ^ | March 26, 2007 | Pew

Posted on 03/27/2007 7:23:23 PM PDT by freedomdefender

A solid majority of Americans say they want their congressional representative to support a bill calling for a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq by August 2008. Nearly six-in-ten (59%) say they would like to see their representative vote for such legislation, compared with just 33% who want their representative to oppose it.

Democrats are united in their support of legislation calling for a U.S. troop withdrawal by August 2008, and most independents (61%) also favor this step. Most Republicans oppose this step, but there are substantial divisions within the GOP. More than four-in ten moderate and liberal Republicans (44%) want their representative to vote for legislation calling for an August 2008 deadline for a troop withdrawal, compared with only about a quarter of conservative Republicans (26%). Even as the public registers strong support for a congressional deadline for withdrawing U.S. forces, there has been a modest rise in optimism about conditions in Iraq. Four-in-ten Americans say that the U.S. military effort in Iraq is going very or fairly well, up 10 points from February, when positive perceptions reached an alltime low. The shift has come disproportionately among Republicans (up 16 points), though independents and Democrats also are more positive about the situation in Iraq than they were in February (up 10 and nine points, respectively). The latest nationwide survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted March 21-25 among 1,503 Americans, finds that opinions about the impact of President Bush’s troop surge in Iraq – like nearly every other issue relating to the war – are deeply divided along partisan lines. Most Republicans (53%) believe that the troop increase put in place by George W. Bush is already making things better in Iraq, and 68% say that the surge will make things better in the long run. Democrats are dubious that the troop increase is either currently improving the situation in Iraq, or will have a positive effect in the future. Independents are generally skeptical the troop increase is making things better now, but 38% believe that the surge will make things better in the long run.

A public deadline, like that voted on by the Senate, would telegraph intentions to the terrorists. However, I hope the administration has a PRIVATE plan to get out by mid-2008 at the latest. If we're still fighting in Iraq by the 2008 general elections, I fear that the GOP will be routed and we'll have 8 years of Hillary and a Democrat Congress - something America might not be able to recover from.

I love my country but hate the majority of my countrymen. Sorry to be so harsh, but that's how a feel these days. This nation deserves what's coming.

Here's the problem: If we're still fighting in Iraq by November of 2008, the Republicans will lose big in the elections and you'll have President Hillary to complain about for 8 years. That's not propaganda, that's truth. We lost the 2006 elections because of the Iraq war. At some point, it has to come to an end or the GOP could be doomed. THink: Hillary plus the Dems in Congress could enact an open- borders policy that would swamp America with new Democrat voters. End of the GOP.

I love my country but hate the majority of my countrymen.

You may hate them, but you have to take their opinions into account or the GOP loses for a generation. The Iraq war has become deeply unpopular. That's why we lost Congress in 2006, and if it's still going on - and we're still fighting - in Nov 2008, we'll lose the White House.

So Americans will accept losing a war and will reward the people who facilitated that loss.

Ronald Reagan would never think such garbage.

He would do what is right and not worry or fear both losers and failures in the press and the Democrat Party.

The Pew Research Poll is affiliated with Maddie Albright . . . 'nuf said!

HOWEVER, if we examine the poll for directionality (UP or DOWN) only, we can find some interesting results:

POLL COMPOSITION:
25% Republicans 36% Democrats (+11 Ds)

ESTABLISH TIMETABLE:
55% Should 38% Should NOT -- MARCH
59% Should 35% Should NOT -- FEBRUARY
[The should NOTs increased by 7 points!]

RIGHT/WRONG TO USE MILITARY IN IRAQ
49% Wrong 43% Right MARCH
54% Wrong 40% Right FEBRUARY
[The RIGHTs increased by 8 points!]

ANOTHER VIETNAM
46% Yes 37% No MARCH
50% Yes 33% No FEBRUARY
[The NOs increased by 8 points!]

BOTTOM LINE: Despite a gross oversampling of Democrats (11 points) and recent Anti-War Demonstrations, the RIGHT THINKERS increased their margins by 7-8 points!!

Ronald Reagan would never think such garbage.

Ronald Reagan didn't get us into a years-long no-win war. In fact, he beat the Soviets without losing a single American. People are tired of this war. You may not like that - I may not like that - but if the GOP says, "tough" to the American people, the GOP will become the permanent minority party. If Hillary takes the White House and the Dems keep Congress, I predict we won't ever see the Republicans back in power - because they'll let in millions of Mexicans and give them citizenship and the right to vote. Most of America will become like California.

The gutless worry about liberal polling firms.

The GOP lost in 2006 because some so-called conservatives stayed home.

The GOP did not lose because of Iraq.

The liberal press, that conservatives never watch, and the liberal politicians, that utter the same rhetoric about Iraq as Osama Bin Laden, are the ones spewing their fake news and fake polls.

Conservatives should stand strong and not worry like a feckless lib.

We're going to lose it no matter what we do. The leftist poison has spread too far.

The Iraqi War has made the whole world into a bunch of mice. Just look at the Iran conflict with Great Britain involving the saliors. There is no world outrage. The world wants to live in a Pre 9-11 universe. People are fatigued with the War on Terrorism and wish the terrorists would just go away.

A "no-win" war.

That's the line being used by liberals and terrorists.

Which one are you?

We did not lose in 2006 because of the WOT/Iraq! We lost for two reasons...

1. The RNC/GOP stopped talking about our successes in the WOT/Iraq and ALLOWED the DEMS/MSM to set false premise after false premise..

2. A segment of the GOP base stayed home (foolishly so) and put a couple of domestic issues above that of the WOT/Iraq - This was absurd by those in our base.

But it is not if the DEMs created a bunch of new voters simply because of an anti-WOT/Iraq vote. That is BS.....It was more our base not turning out in force over domestic issues.

If the RNC and WH would stand up tall and take the fight to the DEMs / MSM over how successful we have been in this WOT....and tell why we must stay on the offensive we will win!

The RNC needs to stay consistent and constant with the message of VICTORY over our enemies......Why we must continue this fight and the real threats we face.

National security is still a huge GOP issue if we stand up and fight for it....

And how is that different than the plan of Jorge Arbusto and his RINO Sancho Panzas?
