I wonder how the Varyag is going to help the Chinese get ready for a full-size CV? The Varyag has a ski-jump bow instead of catapaults. I think that means that the aircraft operated off each carrier will be different. About the only thing they're going to have in common is arrested landings.

Umm,not exactly, the mode of launch doesn't mean different aircraft. You could launch an SU-33 using catapults & also via the ski-jump.Problem is that ski-jump is inferior to catapults in that aircraft are launched at lower weights, limiting fuel & weapon loads.

There is very little evidence available on what China's future carriers will use-catapults or ski-jumps.The aircraft options are the SU-33 & the Chinese J-10.

They can't even get the Russian POS they have going.

The advances in China's technology even though it is by in large stolen can't be ignored. China isn't having to take the time for R&D like we did and we advanced at a very rapid pace from the late' 1950's- present. Actually by early 1960's we had a nuke carrier built on 1950's technology. Our first one we turned out in 4 years from award date to commissioning. Our early class nuke carrier born of 1950's technology is still operating today and just as deadly as the ones that came afterward.

Russia sleeps but Russia isn't out of the picture as a world power. She has a cash flow problem. There is plenty of cash available in the world for her especially if she agrees to become a hired gun for such nations as Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt, etc. Russia could be turning out ships at a very fast rate and yes even sell ready to go ships to China.

Russia made mistakes but one they didn't make was destroying their defense manufacturing capabilities. We sold ours to developers as well as our bases to whoever including leasing a Naval facility to China.

If Russia starts building for M.E. nations or being defense for hire and assisting China on a full scale it will take us years to catch up. We didn't simply shutter our plants we tore them down and destroyed tooling. As well we retrained those workers for other jobs.

Think about this. It's a sad day for U.S. defense when Sec of Defense orders a uniform change and the changed uniform articles were MADE IN CHINA.

They really need to start researching small UCAV support and command vessels. They should try to skip the manned aircraft paradigm completely and start stealing all the UAV technology they can and build UCAVs to operate from 'em.

...which is precisely what we will do in order to maintain our current capabilities in Sea Control & Land Attack as our carrier fleet dwindles from 12, 11, 10 ... 9? Imagine UCAV's operating off a LHA/LHD or even a modified container ship?

Necessity: the mother of invention.

I knew that the Varyag was slated to get SU-33's. Not sure why the Chinese are talking about J-10's for the full-size CV's (probably a national pride thing).

You would agree that it wouldn't make much sense to build a 93,000 ton CV with a ski ramp? I think we can safely assume that it will have catapaults of some type.

The J-10 seems a neat aircraft.Operating a (relatively) inexpensive single engined jet off a carrier makes sense.

It does make sense to use catapults off a nuclear powered carrier given that the reactors can meet the power demand of the steam-cats.Problem for the Chicoms is perfecting the Cats.Even the cranky French had to buy them from Uncle Sam.

“Come on,let’s be real. Taiwan and Japan combined couldn’t stand against China long enough to eat lunch there.India while having nuclear weapons isn’t out looking for a fight with China.Russia is a different animal, however I don’t see them being stupid enough to pick a fight at this point in history with China !!!”

That depends on how long it would take for the Japanese to arm and the Taiwanians to buy a few US Ohio class subs.

You give Taiwan a loaded Ohio Class, they can declare that China belongs to them and threaten to eliminate China.

“MHO snipe, the guy clearly does not know what he is talking about...

Haha...clearly.

“He keeps speaking of China’s brown water navy...”
LOL, you brought it up not me. Had you answered my question the first time, you would’ve only read it once dummy.
“...when they are building blue-water assets like there is no tomorrow.”
Haha...oh no! Well, when they get their first carrier battle group built and past predeployment work-ups, they reunite it with the imaginary air wing which in turn has passed carrier qualifications. When they perform some operational readiness exercises and when a grip of training evolutions are completed...and then finally when the carrier and it’s impotent air wing knocks out a final month of preparations...give the DoD a call.
~chuckle~
They’ll proceed to send a single Virginia class to drop the entire lot to the bottom of the South Chine Sea.
You’re a typical alarmist Bro. uninformed [yet believing the contrary] and out of the [real] loop, all the while projecting imaginary threats and condescending to anyone who proves not to live up to your lofty drama-queen standards.
If you knew half of what you thought you did, you would’ve realized before the second book that you were chasing the wrong threat.”
DOD:* At the 2006 Zhuhai Air Show, PRC military and civilian officials asserted China’s interest in building an aircraft carrier.”

thanks to Clinton.

So few realize that is the issue.

Now we can crawl back into our caves.

China should know that aircraft carriers are highly vulnerable to supersonic cruise missiles, which China produces in abundance and sells worldwide. But, if China needs to participate in the high-marking contest, an aircraft carrier will do until actual shooting begins.
