The New York Police Department has hired a 24-year-old Muslim leader to become the Islamic chaplain for the thousands of Muslims in the department, officials announced yesterday.
Khalid Latif is the second Islamic chaplain ever hired by the police.
"Because of the life-and-death nature of police work, the role of the chaplain in the police department takes on specific importance," the Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. "At the bedsides of police officers wounded in the line of duty and regrettably, all too often, at the sides of family members after a police officer has been killed in the line of duty."

“Thousands of muslims in the department...?”
Oh my.
Someday we just might have the Iraqi situtation where we turn on each other from within the police department.
“The department’s first chaplain, Imam Pasha, left more than a year ago.”
I wonder why he left ... .
A horrible number of police & fire deaths occurred just a few short years ago courtesy of the Religion of Peace.
This makes about as much sense as holding Japanese language classes on Oahu in 1942.
Maybe Imam Pasha had to catch a flight somewhere, act suspicious, and then file a lawsuit to get some cash.
“Thousands of muslims in the department...?”
Probably. They are pushing recruitment in Albany too.
There are 500,000 Muslims and a couple hundred mosques in NYC. Doesn’t it make sense to have Msulim cops?
No.
How many Christian cops would one find in ALL muslim countries?
None.
Larding up American police forces with muslim coppers is foolish!
but the 1000s number is a lie
Keep in mind, Al-Qaeda is a militant Sunni Islamist terrorist organization which was behind the 9/11 attacks. The 9/11 hijackers who crashed two airliners into the WTC towers were also Sunni Muslims. Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein are also Sunni Muslims.
Note also that newly named NYPD Chaplain, Imam Khalid Latif, is also a member of the Sunni Muslim sect.
best estimate by the city. the muslims have been in NYC for over a century. arab community is older than that.
Would these cops not enter a non-Halal butcher? What other aspects of their religion might suddenly make them less-than 100% cops?
I don't know, but it is a reasonable question to ask, not out of prejudice, but out of a rational reading of recent history.
As a former employee in NYC I know this wasnt anyway near the truth
It seems to me that Muslims (and other groups) in NYC assimilate more quickly than other places. Maybe because there’s a long-standing Arabic community and maybe because NYC is a “work or die” kinda place.
Note: for all of the protests in front of the UN etc. there have rarely been more than a few hundred — mostly from Jersey.
Note 2: there were a bunch of Muslims killed on 9/11 (a fact not talked about by anyone). NYC muslims probably know where they stand in the scheme of things.

Except that America is not a Christian country. It is majority Christian, but officially neutral.
This city is populated with people of all faiths. So long as they meet the criteria for employment, and can carry out the duties, it would be foolish not to have representatives from all communities in the police department. Not that we should have quotas, but we should be encouraging people from all walks of life, all backgrounds and all faiths represented.
Why on Earth should we care about what other countries do? I don't think we should be looking to them for any examples.
Shortly after 9/11, the State Dept posted a list of WTC victims by country.
I'll give you one guess as to the only middle east country NOT on that list.
