Louisiana senator blocks Corps nominee because of Katrina work

NEW ORLEANS Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu (LAN'-droo) says she's blocked the Senate confirmation for the proposed head of the Army Corps of Engineers so there can be a debate on his role in rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

The Corps has been hammered by critics for installing faulty drainage pumps to protect New Orleans. Landrieu wants government auditors to find out if contracts for the work were subject to improper influence. She also wants to know if New Orleans was in danger, and what the Corps was thinking when it had them installed.

The Corps has said that having some pumping capacity was better than none, and that the pumps could be fixed while in place.

Landrieu says the hold she's placed on the nomination of Lieutenant General Robert Van Antwerp doesn't question his credentials. She wants to know if he'll be a partner in recovery, or an agent of a failed status quo.

Well...it is a coastal city built below sea level in a hurricane zone......so I'd say yes, it is. And with global warming about to raise sea levels I'd say everyone should start fleeing NOW!

Mary Landrieu should be thankful that Patty Murray is also a US Senator, if Murray wasn’t there Landrieu would be the dimmest bulb in the chamber.

Many Louisiana voters have the same question about Landrieu.

You are right about that and I hope Louisianans (sp) remember that come 2008 when I think her term is up. I hope forever!

In the 1970s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Barrier Project planned to build fortifications at two strategic locations, which would keep massive storms on the Gulf of Mexico from causing Lake Pontchartrain to flood the city. An article in the May 28, 2005, New Orleans Times-Picayune stated, “Under the original plan, floodgate-type structures would have been built at the Rigolets and Chef Menteur passes to block storm surges from moving from the Gulf into Lake Pontchartrain.”
