In Islamic society a man can (and frequently does) dump an old, worn-out wife and bring home another one; he marries them for different purposes, one for his house slave, one to bring up the children, one for sex, etc. And they apparently do not get along enormously well and there is a considerable amount of rivalry and cruelty, since one wife is usually more powerful than the others.
