For Frances Socialists, among others, the coming presidential election could descend into a nightmare like last falls in Florida.
This is the first presidential election in France to use paperless computer voting. As many as 1.5 million of the 44.5 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots electronically in more than 80 municipalities around the country.
But with election day less than three weeks away, opposition to the electronic voting machines has grown, in part because a small percentage of them are made by the same American company whose machines were involved in a bitterly disputed Congressional election in Florida last November.
We have doubts about the reliability of these machines, Gilles Savary, a spokesman for Ségolène Royal, the Socialist Party candidate, said in an interview. I dont want to lecture America. But we dont want France to fall into the same Kafkaesque balloting as happened in the United States.
Last week, the Socialist Party called for a moratorium on using the machines until their reliability could be determined. The party also wants a debate on the issue in Parliament.

With the latest polls showing Sarko beating Royal by almost 10 points in the runoff, panic is setting in.
Name calling, hyperbolic promises, and of course, the weapon of last resort, US bashing!
Guess they don’t like computers either...next it’ll be cell phones...then calculators....pretty soon it’ll be the abacus they object to...wow France’ll be in the Stone Age.
Somehow I’m sure this is Bush’s fault.
Liberté, égalité, fraternité... what? No vote by mail? Sacrebleu!
Sounds like typical liberals to me.....whether they be French or American!
I was going to make a snide remark about how opposition to bathing was also growing in France, but decided not to...
The Socialists should be informed that the electricity to make the machines operate either comes from nuclear power or from sources that cause global warming. They should not vote to save the drowning polar bears.
Fox reported Sunday that Royal had pulled ahead and would win the runoff.
Any Confirmation?
The Socialist are afraid of a secure voting system. They tend to lose, in such cases.
Les ordinateurs ne sont pas grenouille amicale.
Now, is it possible to introduce some malware into these machines to make them produce the french equivalent of electronic butterfly ballot?
Sunday was April the 1st, wasn’t it?
Electronic voting makes people nervous, because somebody has to program the machines, and programs can be manipulated, machines err, and there’s no trace of the error (you can’t recount the ballots if electronic data is spoiled).
There is no reason to go to full electronic voting. Paper voting works just fine.
Anyway, yes, the Socialists look like they are panicking, and they should be: it was Royal’s election to lose, and she did.
It looks like it will be Sarkozy vs. Royal in the runoff, and she’ll get to lose again.
Very good news for Sarko :)
Vous êtes une putain.
Vous êtes un bâtard.
Putain...
Bâtard...
Let the games begin!
Except “bâtard” wouldn’t be the word, and “putain” doesn’t get it right.
It would be more:
T’es un salaud!
Et tu es une salope!
Con...
Conne...
But this is a family website, so we can’t write any of that here, nosiree.
Thanks for the help... My 'language' skills need some work!
