Gates: 'Troop Surge' Strategy is Working in Iraq
Washington Post ^ | 4/5/07 | Bill Brubaker

Posted on 04/05/2007 6:27:38 PM PDT by blitzgig

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates insisted today the United States' "troop surge" strategy is working in Iraq, but he warned against "happy talk" to describe the often-gruesome sectarian violence that continues to mark the four-year-old war.

Gates said large-scale bombings have increased in Iraq, just as American military officials predicted they would, in the two months since the United States sent thousands of new troops to Baghdad and Anbar province.

"The early signs are positive," Gates said, before quickly adding at a Pentagon news conference: "There is a great reluctance to engage in happy talk about this. It's a tough environment."

Gates spoke as American and British military officials announced that 11 soldiers--seven from the U.S. and four from Britain--have been killed in Iraq over the last two days. All told, more than 3,200 U.S. military personnel have died since the conflict began in March 2003, and polls show a clear majority of Americans oppose the war.

Gates said Iraqis are being tortured and killed by death squads comprised of a "relatively small" number of people determined to "stoke the sectarian violence and, frankly, to try and make the [U.S.] Baghdad security plan fail."

As Congress debates whether to continue funding for the war, Gates warned of dire consequences if the United States pulls its troops out of Iraq. Congressional Democrats are pushing for a timetable for troop withdrawals, and Bush has promised to veto any such bill.

Maybe it is getting a little more difficult to be an insurgent in Baghdad-—but the insurgents over here are still implanted firmly in the Congress and Bush hating press.

...the United States' "troop surge" strategy is working in Iraq....

The New York Times usually enjoys interrupting pro-American news with some other huge so-called scandal. I'm waiting to see what the leftists have up their sleeves...

Easter weekend I guess. But Rosie O’Donnell has been a great example of the kooky left lately too, they may be trying to distance themselves. Temporary thing, I’m sure.

I would rather risk it “being a little early to have happy talk” than allow the speaker of the House to undermine our strategy by going to the enemy and giving America’s President the 3rd finger in front of the world!

As you may know the Iraqi Website documents (FMSO) was unfortunately shut down last November. I am now reading the 1600 documents that I downloaded before the website was shut down, I will translate and post right here on FR any document that I find important.

I am really disappointed because the FMSO (Foreign Military Studies Office) shut down the website because the treasonous New York Times published an article where the incompetent IAEA complained about a document published on the website and belong to Saddam regime nuclear website. The IAEA claim that the document contain highly sensitive information about how to build an atomic bomb. Indeed the document was part of the documents that Iraq supplied to the IAEA and many nation could have accessed this document if they wanted to and they do not need to look for it published on the FMSO website.

Thought so.

I firmly believe there are secrets in buried in the Iraqi desert the Dems want to stay buried. In a free and open Iraq the truth would be told and those complicit in Saddam's rein of terror would be exposed.

England has George Galloway. Who sold out America?

Even with the very small percentage of Iraqi documents that were published we can establish the following undisputed facts:

Saddam regime had much stronger relation to terrorism that anyone ever thought.

Saddam regime never stopped working on WMD program, in particular all the precursors required to make Chemical Weapons.

“Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates insisted today the United States’ “troop surge” strategy is working in Iraq, but he warned against “happy talk” to describe the often-gruesome sectarian violence that continues to mark the four-year-old war. “

He insisted? Gives me the impression that he stomped the floor, had a hissy fit and said, “the surge is working, Excelsior!!!”
