UK captives tell of ill treatment

Royal Navy personnel seized by Iran were blindfolded, bound and held in isolation during their 13 days in captivity, the crew have said.

They were also subject to random interrogation and rough handling, and faced constant psychological pressure.

In a joint statement the crew also stressed that they were inside Iraqi waters at the time of the capture.

Royal Marine Captain Chris Air said it became apparent that opposing their captors was "not an option."

"If we had, some of us would not be here today, of that I am completely sure," he said.

"We realised that had we resisted there would have been a major fight, one we could not have won and with consequences major strategic impacts.

"We made a conscious decision not to engage the Iranians and do as they asked," he said.

The crew said they spent nights in stone cells, sleeping on piles of blankets and were kept in isolation until their last few nights.

They were also lined up against a wall while weapons were cocked, making them "fear the worst".

Funny thing is, in many countries (especially 3rd World), lefties are patriotic. Just not in the West. Maybe it’s just that lefties the world over hate the superpower, whoever that is.

We had patriotic lefties during WWII. Arguably FDR was one of them. Of course, for the averate in the street lefty, we were fighting on the same side as the USSR in that war, so I guess it was easy to be a patriot even if you despised capitalism and worldly possessions. I’m sure the patriotic lefties of those days figured on changing our American system to a leftist system once the Nazis were defeated. That effort has been successful in many ways, unfortunately.

“Where’s the Left on the violation of the Geneva Conventions?
[...crickets...]”

They just got back from Syria, then they and Tony Blair are moving on with a trip to continue praising Iran for being wise and a wonderful nation.

We had patriotic lefties during WWII.

The lefties were dead set against getting involved in the war until Hitler attacked their beloved Soviet Union.

Yeah, I think you are right about that...if memory serves, all the folks on the American Left went on about what a great guy Hitler was (since he and Stalin had signed an agreement) until he attacked the Soviets, at which point they changed their tune.

Brave words from someone not in that position. Lightly armed against heavy calibre and RPGs. An Iranian heavy calibre opening up on one of those inflatables would have resulted in a massacre.

well, that is one result from an inept squad commander. There are other scenario’s I am sure you can envision.

His career as an officer is over, his troops should have been marching in formation, not waving to reporters. It is their job to be professionals. They failed. Hell, their marching in straight lines toward the colonist took more courage.

The ill treatment dished out to the British hostages needs to be paid back to the Tehran dictatorship - with interest.

I can just about promise you I had a rougher go of it at SERE training before going to Nam. That little exercise was very convincing. The military had to modify the program because a couple of fatalities occurred during the exercise.
