NEW ORLEANS, April 6 (Reuters) - Natural changes in ocean currents are to blame for increased Atlantic hurricane activity in recent years, not man-made global warming as many scientists believe, hurricane forecaster William Gray said on Friday.
"I think the whole human-induced greenhouse gas thing is a red herring," Gray said in a speech at the National Hurricane Conference.
Gray, whose annual forecasts for the hurricane season are closely watched, said the Earth has warmed the past 30 years, but that it was due to flucuations in ocean currents. He predicted a cooling off period would begin in five to 10 years as the currents change again.
"I see climate change as due to the ocean circulation pattern. I see this as a major cause of climate change," Gray told the meteorologists and emergency management specialist who attend the annual conference.
The Atlantic had destructive hurricane seasons in 2004, when four major hurricanes struck Florida, and 2005 when Katrina and Rita badly damaged the U.S. Gulf Coast.
In 2005, there were a record 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes, but last year was much calmer with 10 tropical storms and five hurricanes.
This year, Gray's forecasting team is predicting an active season with 17 named storms, nine of which will become hurricanes.
Periods of intense Atlantic hurricane activity are not unusual and follow the change of a key Atlantic Ocean current that shifts every 30 years or so to bring warmer ocean waters that encourage hurricane formation, Gray said.
He said carbon dioxide levels in the Earth's atmosphere have increased, but periods of hurricane activity preceded the build-up of the gas, which is blamed for warming and is the byproduct mostly of fossil fuel burning.
The changing ocean current "goes back for hundreds of thousands of years," Gray said. "These are natural processes. We shouldn't blame them on humans and CO2."
Gray said the Atlantic current appears to change because of a rise and fall in water salinity.
The combative professor dismissed the work of scientific colleagues who have linked global warming and increased hurricane activity, saying they were simply seeking grant money.
"You've heard a lot of foolishness over the last few years," said Gray
and kudos for reuteurs to publish another point of view sliver of sanity
He’s saying Al Gore is wrong, which is becoming the equivalent of saying Lenin or Stalin is wrong in another time and place.
"...In 1928, a previously unknown agronomist, Trofim Lysenko "invented" a new agricultural technique, vernalization (using humidity and low temperatures to make wheat grow in spring). He promised to triple or quadruple yields using his technique. In reality, the technique was neither new (it was known since 1854, and was extensively studied during the previous twenty years) nor useful.
Soviet mass-media presented him as a genius who had developed a new, revolutionary technique. At the time, Soviet propaganda had a tendency to focus upon stories of peasants who, through their own canny ability and intelligence, came up with solutions to practical problems. Lysenko milked the attention, denouncing geneticists and promoting his own ideas of how agriculture works. He was, in turn, supported by the Soviet propaganda machine, which overstated his successes and omitted mention of his failures. Instead of making controlled experiments, Lysenko relied upon questionnaires from farmers, using them to "prove" that vernalization increases wheat yields by 15%..."
Thank you Dr Gray. Stupidity is the word I would have used:-()
that is very cool
anyone want to post this
When I was a teenager and we studied the Lysenko phenomenon in school, I couldn’t believe how a whole people could be led to believe such rubbish. So here we have Algore (following in the footsteps of Lysenko, Ehrlich, Carson, etc. etc.) and people are every bit as gullible today as they were in the Stalinist USSR.
Repent heathen, REPENT.
I know a guy who has been a meteorologist for 45 years, and he thinks “man created” global warming is a political lie.
Why modern environmentalism is a heathen religion:
- there is tithing (donations to Greenpeace, Earth First, etc)
- there is the notion of sin (polluting)
- there are indulgences (carbon offset credits)
- there are oracles/prophets (GW researchers) and high-priests (Al Gore, celebrities)
- they rely on indoctrination at a young age
- it is considered blasphemy to go against their "wisdom"
- all evidence is to be interpreted only in light of their unquestionable "truths"
- they are moral busybodies that want to push their views on everyone else by threat of sword
- people who do not strictly follow their guidelines are considered immoral
- people who publicly support opposing views are said to be possessed by evil entities (corporations)
- violence is advocated by many adherents (ELF, ALF, Earth First, etc) to promulgate their "truths"
- they say we are DOOMED FOR ETERNITY unless we listen to them
- if we go against the will of their god (Gaea), their god will punish us (hurricanes, floods, disease, searing heat)
How does that infamous statement go....
“He lied to us....He played on our fears!!!”
He’ll be dragged into a Star Chamber anytime now.
That comes with the territory. One of the burdens of speaking the truth is that you get a lot of stuff thrown at you by idiots.
oh yeah he’s like a Copernicus
Strange how no one mentions El Nino anymore...
ok that was really good
And this from your link:
“The Party-controlled newspapers inevitably applauded Lysenko’s “practical” efforts and questioned the motives of his critics.”
