Virginia Senator Webb Urges Closure of Guantanamo Bay

Tuesday , April 10, 2007

AP

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The United States should begin phasing out its detention center at Guantanamo Bay, where terrorist suspects are being held, freshman U.S. Sen. Jim Webb told a group of University of Virginia politics students Monday.

Webb said he agreed early in the War on Terror that such a facility was needed. "But there comes a point where people need to be dealt with through the legal system," Webb said. "I think that time has come."

About 385 men are imprisoned at the U.S. Naval Base in southeast Cuba on suspicion of links to Al Qaeda or the Taliban. Some have been held for more than five years.

After speaking to the students in professor Larry J. Sabato's class on American politics, Webb told reporters that the detainees should either be declared prisoners of war or charged in the American judicial system if the U.S. continues to hold them captive.

"We can't just continue to hold people in limbo without charges for this period of time and still call ourselves Americans," Webb said.

His remarks came a week after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review whether the detainees have a right to challenge their imprisonment in federal court. U.S. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, also has called for shutting down the prison camp.

Webb, a best-selling novelist and former Reagan administration Navy secretary who never had held elected office, upset Republican Sen. George Allen in November's election, tipping control of the Senate to Democrats and ending Allen's presidential aspirations.

Sabato called it "one of the most extraordinary upsets in American history" and urged his students to remember it when they face difficult challenges.

“Webb, a best-selling novelist and former Reagan administration Navy secretary who never had held elected office”

They try to make it sound like his novels may be great, which makes him a great thinker. His motto in the race was “Born Fighting.” More like “Stuck on Stupid.”

Who needs UVa anyway!

Sure, just like we tried German and Japanese war criminals here in our courts and they received all the benefits of full Constitutional rights you and I are entitled. What the hell happened to Webb? He has gone off his rocker!

Wonder if macaca was in the audience. He's at UVa now.....

Sabato called it "one of the most extraordinary upsets in American history" and urged his students to remember it when they face difficult challenges.

Now there's an objective opinion. Wasn't it Sabato who said during the campaign that he had a friend who's friend had a friend that heard George Allen say n*gg*r in 1972? Allen also faced the full onslaught of the Washington Post every day for six months. And now we have this psychopath in the Senate!

Who cares what this freak thinks?
From one of his books:
- Lost Soldiers: “A shirtless man walked toward them along a mud pathway. His muscles were young and hard, but his face was devastated with wrinkles. His eyes were so red that they appeared to be burned by fire. A naked boy ran happily toward him from a little plot of dirt. The man grabbed his young son in his arms, turned him upside down, and put the boy’s penis in his mouth.”

Sabato said "I know he said it" and later retracted it to "well, that's what I heard."

I propose we send the inmates at Guantanamo to live in northern Virginia — Arlington or McLean, perhaps.

They elected this monster — let them live with his policies.

Any article that quotes bad-rug Sabato is immediately suspect.

Hey Webb, you f'ng moron, Congress has already legislated how these bastards will be handled. It's called the MCA. Your individual opinion doesn't mean a thing. STFU and go polish your gun.

Webb, a best-selling novelist...

Didn't at least one or two of these novels feature a guy putting his doodle into the mouth of a young boy?

Lets send them to New Jersey to the take the place of the people from New Jersey who keep moving down here and voting liberal!

New Jerseyites will be the death of Virginia! We need to plug the northern border!

Sabato did every damn thing he could to get Webb elected. He and Allen were at UVa together in the early 1970s, and you still can’t convince me there isn’t some deep-seated personal animus there going back almost forty years.

Sabato’s a liberal hack, anybody who’s followed his career from his days at Virginia Commonwealth University knows that.

He did more than that. He referred people who came to him with these cockamamie stories to reporters at major newspapers then went on TV and claimed to know the allegations were absolutely true.
