Elizabeth Edwards Says She's Scared of 'Rabid Republican' Gun-Toting Neighbor
Associated Press ^ | Monday, April 09, 2007

Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home — and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.

Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way off his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.

"I wouldn't be nice to him anyway," Edwards said in an interview. "I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me."

But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.

"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."

Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.

Johnson, 55, acknowledges his Republican roots. But he takes offense to the suggestion

He was probably afraid they were there to do some clear-cutting...like on the Edwards property.

the neighbor does sound like a jerk, but it’s not because he’s a republican - he’s just a jerk.

Well, maybe. But consider the source. He might not be the jerk the lying AP and Elizabeth Edwards make him out to be.

A few questions I need answered. Was Johnson’s slummy property property there before the Edward’s bought their property?

If so why should he clean it up just becasue the rich Edwrds clan moved in?
Is it really all that slummy?

The Edwards family has yet to meet this man in person and already she says she wouldnt like him?
Who are they using to ask him to clean his property? Isnt Edwards a lawyer? If Johnson were in violation of the law couldnt he file suit? You can be nice without sending your kids over Mrs. Edwards. Why havent you gone over and introduced yourself? Thats how I met my neighbors.

Mrs. Edwards com over in this article as a person who thinks their waste doesnt smell.

A “lavish 28,000 square feet estate”!
Lordy chasin ambulances pays good these days!

The money that paid for his mansion was forcibly taken from the pockets of others. Furthermore, the lawsuit that made Edwards rich, has resulted in thousands of unnecessary C sections at childbirth by doctors fearful of being sued unless they perform one. This runs up health costs and time has shown these C sections do not prevent the affliction they were supposed to prevent.

Edwards claimed that the docs were negligent in not performing a C section which resulted in his clients baby born with cerebral palsy. Yet major increase in the numbers of C Sections in childbirth since Edwards pioneered the lawsuit has not resulted in a reduction of infants born with CP..

Edwards, a sleazy, oily tongued, lawyer with a mansion on a hill, is a perferct represenative for Democratic ethics.

So I assume this means we can expect Edwards will relinquish all military might before he enters into any diplomatic negotiations, since brandishing one's capabilities is simply not productive.

Did anybody ask whether these trespassers subsequently respected the guy's property rights? It seems to me the outcome is somewhat relevant to the story.

From here:

Across the road from the entrance to the Edwards estate is Big Valley Auto Repair, a modest garage crowded with cars.

There is a sign painted on the fence: “Go Rudy Giuliani 2008,” a reference to the former New York City mayor who is expected to seek the Republican nomination for president.

Monty Johnson, owner of the garage site and one of Edwards’ closest neighbors, is no Edwards fan. Johnson has left standing an abandoned house facing the entrance to the Edwards property.

“He claims to be for the poor people,” said Johnson, 55, a farmer and retired landscaper. “He don’t care about us. I see him jogging. He doesn’t pull over and say, `How are you doing?’ “

Johnson, meanwhile, has problems of his own. His tract of land has been in his family since before the Great Depression, but is now looking to sell his property. Partly because of the rising property taxes which the Edward’s 28,000 square foot, $5.3 million estate is prodding sharply upward. Partly because he doesn’t want to be near crabby neighbors that are constantly complaining about him:

“I thought he was supposed to be for the poor people,” Johnson said. “But does he ever socialize with any poor people? He doesn’t speak to me.”

102 acres would provide most people with a sufficient buffer to any unpleasant neighbors. If Mrs. Edwards is that sensitive and fearful, they should have taken greater care in selecting their property.

Thanks, but I'll have to look at it later. The reason it's X-ed on my browser is because the originating site (a photo sharing site) is blocked by my company's webfilter.

All the same, I think I may be a different sign from the one that you're talking about. Mr. Johnson and the Edwards live about five miles or so north of me in Orange County, off of a semi-main road through the farmland part of OC. I don't know Mr. Johnson personally, however. The sign I was thinking of is one that's about three miles closer to town on my road, which is also a Rudy sign, but is rather, um, jury-rigged in appearance.

I assume Mr. Johnson was already there when the Edwards were looking for land in that area and they would have had ample opportunity to see his property in advance. If so, then it appears that Mrs. Edwards has CHOSEN to move into an area and is now taking steps to force out her neighbor that she doesn’t want. Earth to Elizabeth Edwards, “Being a Republican is NOT a crime.”

We have had bunches of people move in on our road who just assumed they would move out here and do as they pleased on their property and on ours as well - and have to some degree - except where they step on our toes, and then my gun owning but not always toting husband has had to confront them.

Huh. He’s looking to sell, eh?

We need to check the zoning laws in that area. If there are no restrictions, we can hold a Freepathon, buy the property and turn it in to a tire dump or a shooting range. On weekdays it can be rented out for ultralight aircraft and ATVs. It’ll be great.

That'd be a huge Freepathon. The property that Big Valley is on, in Orange County, could go for at least a quarter million, probably a lot more if it were cleaned up.

Ix-nay on the ooting range-shay, however. There's a big trailer park behind Big Valley, and other houses all around the property on both sides. Well, maybe an indoor range could be had, with gun-toting, Realtree-wearing rednecks toting all sorts of hardware from their Broncos into the building!
