Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home — and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.

Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way off his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.

"I wouldn't be nice to him anyway," Edwards said in an interview. "I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me."

But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.

"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."

Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.

Johnson, 55, acknowledges his Republican roots. But he takes offense to the suggestion

He was probably afraid they were there to do some clear-cutting...like on the Edwards property.

the neighbor does sound like a jerk, but it’s not because he’s a republican - he’s just a jerk.

Well, maybe. But consider the source. He might not be the jerk the lying AP and Elizabeth Edwards make him out to be.

He’s most likely just sick of them and their 102 (formerly) wooded acres.

A few questions I need answered. Was Johnson’s slummy property property there before the Edward’s bought their property?

If so why should he clean it up just becasue the rich Edwrds clan moved in?
Is it really all that slummy?

The Edwards family has yet to meet this man in person and already she says she wouldnt like him?
Who are they using to ask him to clean his property? Isnt Edwards a lawyer? If Johnson were in violation of the law couldnt he file suit? You can be nice without sending your kids over Mrs. Edwards. Why havent you gone over and introduced yourself? Thats how I met my neighbors.

Mrs. Edwards com over in this article as a person who thinks their waste doesnt smell.

A “lavish 28,000 square feet estate”!
Lordy chasin ambulances pays good these days!

The money that paid for his mansion was forcibly taken from the pockets of others. Furthermore, the lawsuit that made Edwards rich, has resulted in thousands of unnecessary C sections at childbirth by doctors fearful of being sued unless they perform one. This runs up health costs and time has shown these C sections do not prevent the affliction they were supposed to prevent.

Edwards claimed that the docs were negligent in not performing a C section which resulted in his clients baby born with cerebral palsy. Yet major increase in the numbers of C Sections in childbirth since Edwards pioneered the lawsuit has not resulted in a reduction of infants born with CP..

Edwards, a sleazy, oily tongued, lawyer with a mansion on a hill, is a perferct represenative for Democratic ethics.

So I assume this means we can expect Edwards will relinquish all military might before he enters into any diplomatic negotiations, since brandishing one's capabilities is simply not productive.

Did anybody ask whether these trespassers subsequently respected the guy's property rights? It seems to me the outcome is somewhat relevant to the story.

A 28,000sq ft home carved out of 102 acres in the boonies - and their “gun-toting” neighbor is a jerk.

Um, sure.

Yet the guy is a Giuliani supporter? If that is the case then he is no “rabid” Republican, for sure.

Oh, so the Edwards' are the folks who moved in across the street from me!

Seriously though, they actually did buy and build just a couple of miles down the road from me.
