Rap music sags in popularity Critics blame it for negative influences on our society. Nekesa Mumbi Moody the Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Maybe it was the umpteenth coke-dealing anthem or soft-porn music video. Perhaps it was the preening antics that some call reminiscent of Stepin Fetchit.
The turning point is hard to tap. But after 30 years of growing popularity, rap music is now dealing with an alarming sales decline and growing criticism from within about rap culture's negative effect on society.

Its not just what Imus said that is offensive. How many RAP songs can FReepers find with words that are offensive? Is anyone offended when they hear this crap blasting out of a teenagers car window as they drive through your neighborhood?

There are tons of rap lyrics out there that make Imus’ statements seem like those of a wee kindergartner.

Rap is dead. Rock is dead. Its amazing how long the latter lasted, especially after rock was DESTROYED by those foppish limeys (Zeppelin, Yes, ELP) in the early 70s.
Sinatra, however, is timeless.

The new song “Rock yo Hips” is pretty good. The big drums remind me of a Mahler symphony.

Slapping those parental warning labels on CD's twenty-some years ago, sure helped things out. </sarc>

"alarming sales decline"No, it's not an alarming decline. An alarming decline is the birth rate in the West, the literacy rates of American public school students, and the level of integrity among U.S. elected representatives. A decline in rap music sales should be referred to as an encouraging decline in sales.

“Rap music”? That combination of words makes as much sense as “gay marriage”.

Rock isn’t dead, it’s just evolved over time. Sinatra, in my opinion, sounded better in his earlier years (say in the 1940’s) than in more recent times.

I was never a Led Zep fan. In high school, I was busy discovering early Bob Dylan while "Physical Graffiti" was the must-have album for my peers. I still don't like them, nor their treatment of blues, but I have to admit, Plant's a great rock singer, Page is a great guitarist, and they were a solid band who brought something new and exciting to the scene when they arrived.

The majority of RAP “lyrics” are composed of just a few words...The N word, b*tch and Mother F*. That’s it.

Page was rather sloppy as a guitar player, although he did improve starting with Physical Graffitti. His work on Presence and In Through the Out Door is classic.

Zeppelin jumped the shark when they tried to combine the artsy-fartsy stuff of the period with the blues. They did make some great albums, though. The Ramones, now they kicked butt.
