Hate to burst your bubble, but the Civil War had precious little to do with the Constitution or even basic rule of law, for that matter. Lincoln suspended the Constitution during the Civil War and arbitrary military rule was the norm in much of the country. Like it or not, the southern states were correct in their assessment that they had the right to freely leave the Union they had freely joined. Lincoln in his many comments on the matter made it clear that preserving the Union trumped any other concern be it slavery or the Constitution. While I admire Lincoln for making some very tough choices it should be noted that he was the President who gave form to the leftist concept that the Almighty State trumped any and all other concerns including such trivialities as free speech and the right to keep and bear arms.
In what way did President Lincoln suspend the Constitution?
Like it or not most Southern states didn't freely join anything. They were admitted, and only with the permission of a majority of the existing states through a vote in Congress. Leaving should have required the same.

The poor guys been dead for 142 years and it's amazing at all the nonsense he still gets blamed for.
Nonsense. He suspended Habeus Corpus in the areas under insurrection, which is constitutionally provided for "when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it."
