Democratic politicians lose a soapbox with Imus
LA Times ^ | April 13, 2007 | Peter Wallsten

His show gave many of them a way to reach a national audience of white males -- a crucial voting bloc.

WASHINGTON — They came by the hundreds that hot August day in tiny Johnson City, Tenn., gathering on an asphalt parking lot to meet Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr. It was not just that he might become the state's first black senator. More than that, even in Republican eastern Tennessee, the Democratic congressman was a celebrity — a regular guest on Don Imus' radio show.

And today, with Imus' career in tatters, the fate of the controversial shock jock is stirring quiet but heartfelt concern in an unlikely quarter: among Democratic politicians.

That's because, over the years, Democrats such as Ford came to count on Imus for the kind of sympathetic treatment that Republicans got from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity.

Equally important, Imus gave Democrats a pipeline to a crucial voting bloc that was perennially hard for them to reach: politically independent white men.

With Imus' show canceled indefinitely because of his remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team, some Democratic strategists are worried about how to fill the void. For a national radio audience of white men, Democrats see few if any alternatives.

Which is precisely why so many libs now are demanding that Sharpton and Jackson go after right-wing radio.

The most gleeful of the pack seems to be Keith Olbermann, who seems to think he’s now the top dog at MSNBC.

He’s too stupid to realize that Imus’ show was the ONLY show on MSNBC with any ratings (his show had twice the viewers of all the other MSNBC shows combined) and that by demanding that Imus be fired (he was SO proud he did this) that he’s literally killed the Golden Goose.

MSNBC will be gone shortly.

I made this point in one of the earlier Imus threads. He really is/was the libs leading radio talk show figure with his regular guests drawn from a long list of lefty talking heads. Actually he may have been their only talk show figure of any real consequence. (Take that Al Franken.) Good to have him gone and equally good to watch the libs eat one of their own.

Out of some sort of morbid curiosity, I tuned into MSNBC this morning. They had that goober David Gregory hosting.

Too funny! Like, out of the frying pan, into the fire.

Gregory, who was one of Imus’ favorite guests, is now presiding over the story of Imus’ demise.

If there was justice in this world, he’s be struck dead on air by a bolt of lightning.

(Notice Chris Matthews is not in attendance to this lynching party — just like Nancy Grace is AWOL (again) on the Duke case.)

You wait . . . DU will swear this was all Karl Rove’s doing. Mark my words, that before this day ends, that will be their theory. Funny as hell.

tiny Johnson City, Tenn.,

I love living in a small (I prefer right-sized) town. J City IS my town. If Peter thinks he needs to make some sort of point with "tiny" , fine.

They went after one of their own as a trial run to see if the old ALAR technique could be resurrected. It worked. Now they will go after Rush while the impetus is still there. These things don’t have a long shelf life but are terribly damaging while they burn.Rush is the only target worth assaulting now. They will only get one more shot at this sort of attack before the fire is out. Anyone other than Rush is wasted effort.Getting Rush will get all of the Conservative talkies shut down. He is also the hardest one because he is syndicated. He does not work for an employer and cannot be simply fired. I am sure he understands and is ready for it.

Mark Levin devoted a part of his show last evening to K.O.

Including an e-mail Mark said came from some female consort of Olberman's that was, uh, less than complimentary about his personal habits.

Olbermann will end up as Imus has. He’s another punk who’ll say something dumb enough to get him thrown off. Mark my words.

Rush has anticipated this and has made all neccessary preparations. I would not say he in invulnerable, but after coming through 3 divorces, a drug charge, and a custom's shakedown, he is ready for the onslaught.
