IF Rudy is indeed “way ahead” it is only due to the fact that he is actually IN the race. Mr. Thompson HAS YET DECLARED, but, who do I see on Rudy’s heels? oh wait, nope, OMG, is that Mr. Thompson, who has yet to declare, taking away Rudy’s 1st place? How can that be? Mr. Thompson hasn’t even SPENT ONE RED CENT on his campaign, that hasn’t even happened yet! What could it be? Gasp.....

Not this time around... and his illegals-stance is no better than GW's. Next to Islamism, the illegal-alien situation is the biggest menace we face. I respect both of them... but on this issue, they're abysmal.

Since 1980, save one election, there has been a 'Bush' on the party's ticket. I like Jeb, but we need to get away from potential dynasties in the party. Being an Ohioan who is recovering from the Boob Taft administration, I am very sensitive to that.

As for merits I like Watts and secondly his race could gain some black voters.

Not amoung the majority of blacks I don't think. Blacks are too tied to the Marxist's dimocrat party. They are practically joined at birth. Only those blacks who want to make something of themselves, to get out of the ghetto mentality with the mentality that I can do it myself without the government, will vote for Watts. You remember how the Marxist's used to blast J.C. as an Uncle Tom.

This looks to me to be an internet poll. Not really of any value if that’s the case.

It is an internet poll, with the only restriction being that "You can vote only once per e-mail address. Multiple votes will be deleted." So it's certainly not scientific, and AFA.net's readership is hardly a cross-section of the electorate at all, or even a cross-section of Republican primary voters.

What this poll does, however, is refute some of the rumblings that social conservatives won't support Fred Thompson because he's been insufficiently forceful in his pro-life stance or that he hasn't made many public professions of his Christian faith.

The respondents in this poll are self-selected, but I think we can safely assume that they are, by and large, conservatives who weigh social issues heavily - a key constituency Thompson must win to be nominated. This poll indicates he has a viable chance of doing so.

I think you would agree, while Mr. Steele is a fine man, J.C. is a true conservative and more experienced than is Mr. Steele.

I'm a big fan of JC Watts myself, and would love to see him on the ticket, as he's been one of the better communicators of conservative principles we've seen in some time, as we saw in 1997 when he delivered the Republican response to the State of the Union Address. He also has some of my favorite quotes in politics, like ,"As my daddy use to say to me, dogs don't bark at parked cars."

However, if he is chosen to run for Vice President, I want it to be on his own considerable merits, and not simply to appeal to the "black vote". That sort of race pandering is unworthy of the Republican Party, as I think we've prided ourselves in recent years on being the colorblind party that values individuals based on their own qualities, not their membership in a demographic group that can claim historical victimhood.

Well, you got one right! Rudy’s branded all right, and the brand is “liberal.” And you’re right that Fred isn’t liberal in the same way that Giuliani is - Fred’s brand is “conservative.”

I don't think it was meant to be. It shows that Thompson can carry the "values voters" in a big way. I think that there was some doubt about that with some regarding the Dobson comment, Howard Baker, etc.

I agree that J.C. is a bit more conservative and has more experience than Michael Steele. While former Rep. Watts would be my first choice for Fred’s running mate, I would ethusiastically support either of these two good men and talented politicians.
