I’m thinking of buying one for home protection and what ever this guy used sounds like the perfect weapon for me.

Don't get fire arms info off of media coverage. Find some knowledgeable people and talk to them. The needs of defense and the 'needs' of an attack like that are very different criteria. In addition the main criteria for a gun purchases for use is how well YOU can use it. Go to a gun show or some place with lots of selection and see what fits your hands the best. Many guns don't feel right in many people's hand. Everyone is different and there are many types of guns. Do your homework and ignore this sort of news coverage.

If the shooter really did kill himself then I’m inclined to agree. An Islamic terrorist would want to be killed (to be a martyr and all that crap). Then again, the 9/11 hijacker’s killed themselves, but they kind of had to.

The problem is that 32 people died today, and many of those deaths could have been prevented by civilian CCW and proper police tactics.

You're claiming that civilian CCW would have prevented this. That's almost certainly not true, at least in the first classroom. Weapons would have been in backpacks, not in easy reach, and the shooter would have the advantage of surprise as well.

CCW may have prevented him from moving on to a second room -- but that presumes that the armed students had some idea of how to respond. Otherwise -- if they're just barricaded and waiting -- the guy still has the advantage of surprise.

Not to mention the likelihood of "friendly fire" fatalities, caused by armed students firing over the heads of their classmates.

As for "proper police tactics," well .... how are the police supposed to respond to something like this, where the shootings would have taken much less time than required for the cops to arrive?

We need to rub this tragedy in the faces of the college leadership, and the Virginia General Assembly, who had the chance to fix this inequity last year (HB 1572), but chose the "feel good" way out. Now over 30 people may have paid for their decision with their lives.

Exactly.

I hope you hear soon about your friend's daughter.

prayers for all involved.

“Friend of mine says that an active at his fraternity reports that the shooter first had an argument with his girlfriend - it escalated, and he shot her. Then, about an hour later, he went over to Norris Hall and started popping people. “

What would be odd about that, if that’s the way it happened, is there should of been allot of police on site an hour after the first shooting, not to mention the press. And would the students be going about their normal routine, or would they still be in lock-down mode with the shooter still not in custody? Something sounds fishy about the angry boyfriend rumor.

Certainly looking at an expanse of history there have been groups besides Muslims who have used violence to advance themselves...and some may have been applauded for their beliefs.

However, I refer to an ideology which has exclusively pushed forward an agenda which is grounded and fueled in violence against non muslims.

My statement stands.

Islam = violence

Way too much amo for this to be a disgruntal boyfriend.

And way too many victims. Unless that is the shooter was very mentally ill.

One or the two, he was very sick individual, girlfriend scenario or not, or this was terrorism.

30 rounders have been around for a long, long, long time. They’re commonly available but not commonly purchased. Most of them are *much* longer than the gun they go in, so they’re not very popular. Generally speaking, they are not considered practical for carry usage, so they are limited to range use and, in the case of the police and foreign countries, use in fully-automatic machine pistol variants that are carried openly anyway.

I agree that not all students have the maturity to be carrying. I would hope that the process would prevent them from obtaining a permit. Not everyone that wants a permit gets one.

Indeed.

But if this is an attack, there would be more incidents if it was coordinated with Al Q. or something like it.

We shall see. All we can do now is pray.

I am sure there are a lot of fearful people right now..not knowing how to deal with it...but, not wanting it to happen again.

I DO understand your concerns about having students with guns...I think it is something we just aren’t used to.

1: Stop the bleeding
2: Protect the wound
3: Clear the air passage
4: Treat for shock

My description was overly basic but would have kept most people alive. Traditionally it is airway, breathing, circulation (heart pumping as well as stopping bleeding). Assuming the person has an open airway, is breathing, and their heart is pumping, they can last quite a while even with major trauma.

Thanks for that update.

Just got a message on my cellphone from one of my doctor clients who just took over a private hospital in Roanoke Va..

He was notifying me of a referral. When I called his home number, I asked his son if he was treating anybody from the Virginian Tech shooting.

He told me yes, he's treating three right now.

I can’t look at the hate on other websites. That is the problem with our country. HATE HATE HATE. We need to be brought to our knees in a time of healing. I see the left wackos who are so full of hate and just tell myself they are blinded by truth. Our country needs healing. This is a random act of killings, but we have all sat back and let this type of hate fester. I just can see my God with tears dripping from his eyes with the direction our nation has chosen to go down.

They hired a PC president at VT several years ago. Turned out she was a lesbian and she took the job on the condition that her “partner” would be hired as an instructor, or something like that. There was such an outcry when that was revealed that she had to leave (the instructor). Not sure if I have all my facts right, but my mom lives in Roanoke and it was carried in the papers. I don’t know if this woman is still president or not. What VT needs is leadership. Real leadership.

In england “asian” usually refers to people from the Subcontinent (India, pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri lanka). Many, but far from all, are Muslims. Middle Easterners might also be called Asians, but in England their numbers are far, far smaller than people coming from India and (old East and West)Pakistan.

We need to get (our allies?) the Japanese, the Koreans and yes, even the Chinese to protest the use of the word ‘Asian’ to describe these muslim terrorists.

The rest of the world refers to the japanese, koreans and chinese as "orientals". That term became offensive for some reason here in the states.

I’m just speculating here, but to give the VTI people the benefit of the doubt, it is actually possible to reload one empty gun while holding another (ready) gun in your other hand. It is terribly slow, but it does have the advantage of being able to hold the unarmed at bay while you do it.

I don’t have a complete, detailed list. Only what is stored in memory. The Seattle synagogue shooting, the student who blew himself up outside a football game at OU, the Salt Lake City Mall shooting and the UNC muslim who drove his SUV into a group of students. Just random acts that could be the result of what is now known as sudden jihad syndrome. We’ll have to wait and see on this one. Somehow I doubt it’s all about a girlfriend.
