Conservatives should abort Rudy's bid

Call it the Rudy abortion test. Will Republicans and conservatives pass or fail?

While there obviously are pro-choice Republicans around, the GOP generally ranks as the pro-life party due to its presumed conservative roots. Conservatism sees intrinsic value in each individual - no matter the person's stage of development - and defends his or her right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Therefore, opposition to abortion serves as a conservative policy pillar.

Based on his record running for and serving as mayor, it's fair to say Giuliani was not just pro-choice, but pro-abortion. He supported government funding of abortion, opposed a ban on the partial-birth abortion procedure and objected to parental notification before a minor could get an abortion.

And in April 2001 Giuliani sealed his pro-abortion credentials by speaking at the radical National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League's (NARAL) "Champions of Choice" lunch. He said it was "an honor to be here."

The Associated Press reported that Giuliani said earlier this month: "If I'm going to appoint strict constructionist judges, which I'm going to do, for the reason that they are going to strictly interpret the Constitution, then, as president, I have to be a strict constructionist."

But he continues to favor some taxpayer-funded abortions and to call abortion a "constitutional right." Only someone subscribing to judicial activism - certainly not a strict constructionist - could possibly refer to abortion as a constitutional right. The landmark Roe v. Wade decision on abortion was the most egregious example of judicial activism, as seven U.S. Supreme Court justices manufactured a right to abortion out of thin air.

Get ready to face the wrath of the Guiliani apologetics. Here, I’ll prep you:

“Just because a candidate doesn’t support 100% of your values, doesn’t mean you abandon him and let someone worse win.”
“Guiliani is our best hope for defeating Hillary”
“Guiliani said he’d appoint strict constructionalist judges. What more do you want?”
“Guiliani will be strong on the war on terror, and that is way more important that his social views.”
“Guiliani is a proven LEADER.”

One thing no one brings up here is that the majority of Rudy supporters AGREE with his stand on abortion....Which is their right...but they sure hate to admit it!!!!

we need a poll for all the Rudy fans on all the controversial conservative issues...but I doubt they’d answer honestly...

Only liberals are supporting Rudy. Conservatives aborted him a long time ago.

Look at the current poll on FR and you’ll see that the conservatives prefer Fred by a wide margin.

Rudy will be stopped when the primary voting starts, if most Republicans vote for someone else. This seems rather evident to me. Am I missing something? You do remember the “unstoppable” Howard Dean.

I wish someone like Michael Barone would poll Republicans on the following questions:

Are you pro-life or pro-choice?

Are you pro-life, but would allow exceptions in cases of rape or incest?

If you are pro-life, would you consider voting for a presidential candidate who was pro-choice? (Yes, No, Not sure)

If you are pro-choice, would you consider voting for a candidate who is pro-life? (Yes, No, Not sure)

How high do you rank abortion compared to other issues in play in the current campaign? (Most important, Somewhat important, Not important)

This is just a quick example of the top of my head, for illustrative purposes only. It is NOT meant to be a proper instrument. I would be curious to know how Republicans break and plan to vote on the issue of abortion.

To all my FRiends: No need to respond to the survey itself, that would not constitute anything useful, as you know. It’s just an exercise, not a query.
