“Floating a trial balloon and then sticking your finger in the wind is hardly leadership.”
You’re describing Thomas Jeffeson’s actions prior to running for office. He hated office, and did out of duty...and only when people begged him on running, did he.
He changed the politics of America for 50 years. He predicted the civil war and the very face of political change in America. The man was genius, and had a great friendship with Adams...of great historical significance. Probably more important than any other that proceeded.
Now that’s not Thompson, nor is it Reagan. Fact is I respect Jefferson more than either one of them. He’s the essence of modern right views, but the man couldn’t speak, and he had no desire for political office.
Yet I respect him, and that’s one of the reasons. He barely one his office, but his entering into presidency ushered in the end of the federalists....and hampered the growth of Hamilton’s philosophical views till 1916.
I could gone of this rant forever. Perhaps I just don’t look-up to Reagan that much or most modern political figures. They seem so surface-driven. All words but little action.
The idea of small government means nothing if it’s not seen. Jefferson of today would break the back of the democrats, and there would be no looking back. Unfortunately his caliber died in the era of our founders.
I’m sure many people will polls to say Reagan was better, but they don’t read.
In those days, that is the way they ran. But if you think Jefferson wasn't working like crazy behind the scenes, then you are very mistaken. There was quite a fight with Aaron Burr, and Jefferson was politically ruthless in that fight.
This method of pretending to be disinterested in the presidency lasted all the way through the 19th century. Lincoln did not even attend the Republican convention of 1860.
In the modern era, we want to see our candidates out there working hard.
Also, today's conservatives have more in common with yesterday's Democrats, and vice-versa. I agree that Jefferson was one of the best presidents in history. Why the liberals still claim him, I have not a clue.
