'Thug' bikers have it all wrong

Marie Malagreca wasn't looking for trouble when she traveled from her home in O'Hara to Washington, D.C., for an anti-war protest. But when the 79-year-old woman arrived in the nation's capital on March 17, she found her path blocked by a beefy, leather-clad biker with an agenda. "He got right in my face and started asking me what I thought I was doing protesting the Iraq war," she said, "and then he started calling me dirty names." Malagreca was one of several local protesters who shared similar stories of being roughed up, verbally abused and intimidated by a group of motorcyclists who staged a rowdy counter-protest to the most recent anti-war march on Washington.

Mike Seate makes a good deal of money writing motorcycle books (How to Build a West Coast Chopper) and writing for motorcycle magazines. Knowing some of the folks in the counter-protest groups, I am sure he has probably cut his own throat with this article.

My email to the Mike Seate:
I was at the Gathering of Eagles and can tell you that this woman’s claims are nonsense. I stood with the men you call “thugs” and witnessed none of the behavior you describe. These men are Vietnam War veterans who served their country with pride and continue to serve the cause of freedom. They came to Washington to protect the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial from the same kind of desecration the “peace protesters” committed against the U. S. Capitol earlier this year.
The antiwar protesters are backed by communists and groups that support terrorists. The primary sponsors, International ANSWER has pledged solidarity with the “resistance” in Iraq and Code Pink gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to “the other side” in Fallujah.
Your column ignores these important facts.
There was 1 sign ripped up and the gentlemen who did it (one of us) was a little tired of it being shoved in his face with about 2 inches of breathing room. Not surprisingly, that little tactic of theres stopped right there and they held their signs at a comfortable distance from then on.
The rest of the day was just lefty after lefty in complete meltdown mode at being challenged.

Idiot reporting on idiots. “They have forgotten many things about the country they claim to love — things like free speech, a right extended even to people you don’t agree with.” Free speech is protected in this country under the Constitution, which forbids GOVERNMENT from intefering with this right. The Constitution doesn’t forbid people from expressing their opinions that other people are wrong. There is no absolute right to free speech, in that everyone is free to say what they like, but everyone else is free to criticize them, reject their ideas and even ridicule them. There’s no avoiding the consequences of your own free speech, just like there is no avoiding the consequences of your own ignorance.
