What a remarkable man. This is so heartbreaking.

I believe theres a Biblical quote about a man sacrificing his life for his brother that would describe him, but I cant think of it.
Greater love has no man than this, that a man gives up his life for his friends. John 15:13.

Heroism is by nature a manly trait, and our culture frowns on anything smacking of masculinity. All men, all real men take joy in the opportunity to perform deeds of heroism. Unfortunately, real men are running in fairly short supply these days.I don't know how our culture sucks it out of them. My 7 year old boy knows what a hero is and desperately wants to be one. But by the time they are 20, they seem to be indifferent slackers who find heroism quaint and incomprehensible. The small minority who aren't are, of course, serving in Iraq.

That “pontification” was but a sidenote. The points of the article survive very nicely without the tidbit that “others might have followed suit”.

The point is this: I have lived in NY for almost fourty years, and I can not recall a single instance of a female fireman dying in the line of duty. I’m not a big fan of pointless sex-inclusive language in general (the awkward “first year student” instead of the traditional “freshman”), but in most cases I am content to humor touchy liberals and feminists. However, in the case of firemen, the term is dishonest. Except in the rarest of cases, it is only firmen who risk their lives and die. Therefore, modification is irrational.
