Humanitarian Campbell taught at The Divine Word College, a private Catholic College founded by a retired Army Chaplain in the 1960's.
Julia Campbell was described "as a caring person who would give away her last cent to anyone in need, working as Red Cross volunteer after the Sept. 11 attacks".
Campbell had a brush with death when Typhoon Reming struck on Nov. 30, 2006, hitting Legaspi (my new home, Julia wrote in her blog) dead center, we all experienced a brush with serious injury, if not death. For a few minutes there, as the flood waters rushed inside my little apartment on Marquez Street, I wondered, 'Is this the way it's going to be?' I'll drown right here inside my tiny apartment far away from my family and friends? Thankfully the water stopped rising at my waist and the pressure was off."
But there were others here who were not so lucky.
In of her last posts, Julia wrote: "I hope to spend a week in Hawaii for my 40th birthday. Yes, magfoforty ako! Yikes, where as the all the time gone? How did I get to be this old and why do I still feel like I'm 20?! A big thanks those of you who have stood by me all these years. I love you all! :)
"The body that was found was buried in a shallow grave and some parts of the body are jutting out so they were able to find it",said Lieutenant-Colonel Jose Torres, Philippine army spokesman
Campbell's parents issued a statement posted on the Peace Corps website.
"Today, we learned the news that our Julia was found. We are so very grateful to the workers and searchers who worked diligently to look for and find our daughter, sister and friend." Campbell's family said, "they have "every confidence" that the US and Philippine authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into Julia's untimely death."
Plans are still in development for a memorial service in Fairfax County, Virginia.
You leave the USA, you take your life in your hands. It’s just that simple. There is the USA and the rest of the world. 1st World and 3rd world. If you go to some armpit country and get killed... well, you signed on for the ride and should expect to be mistreated, robbed, raped or killed in ANY foreign country. The governments there will not help, the people there are ready to harm EVERY American they see.
But, this has ALWAYS been true. I don’t know why anyone is so amazed at the truth.
It is sad she lost her life, but it isn’t unexpected.
Campbell seems to have been a person worth knowing.
That said, why is this Peace Corp crap still being funded?
