Running With Scissors (Dowd Takes Down Edwards)
New York Times ^ | 21 April 2007 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 04/21/2007 5:23:01 AM PDT by shrinkermd

...Americans have revered such homely leaders as Abe Lincoln. They seem open to balding pates like Rudy’s and flattops like Jon Tester’s. They don’t want self-confidence to look like self-love.[If this is original with Dowd, it is a very good summary of human nature]...

...Someone who aspires to talk credibly about the two Americas can’t lavish on his locks what working families may spend on electricity in a year. You can’t sell earnestness while indulging in decadence.

Mr. Edwards, the son of a mill worker, moved from a $5.2 million, six-bedroom Federal mansion in Georgetown to a 28,000-square-foot behemoth in North Carolina with a basketball court, a squash court, two stages and a swimming pool.

His 25-year-old daughter, Cate, a former editorial assistant for Vanity Fair, co-founded Urbanista, an online Rolodex that dispenses advice for “hip” girls in Manhattan, offering to be a “bestie” (a best friend) and answer questions like “Where should I go to get my Marc Jacobs shoes reheeled?” and “Does anyone know the best place to get a really great haircut?” One salon the site recommends is Warren-Tricomi, where Edward Tricomi says haircuts range from $121 to $300.

The cost of grooming hair is peanuts compared with the cost of grooming an image. Hillary is paying a fortune to try to buy the secrets of likability. Her financial reports for the first three months of 2007 show debts to consulting firms of $447,000.

Major eyebrows, and her mother’s bone structure.

Heh. She makes her father look feminine.

The right makeup and hairstyling could fix her. If a woman looks that epicene, she’s doing it on purpose.

I don't know. I think this is as good as it gets for her:

I have several thoughts after reading the responses to a MoDo thread.

First, MoDo must appreciate the fact that the personal comments rendered are proof positive of, "every knock is a boost." That is, the amount of resentment boosts her standing and popularity. That is what the NYT pays their commentators for.

Second, in respect to Catherine Zeta Jones, does anyone have any idea of what she has done, written or thought about? Other than serving as a source for masturbatory fantasies for the adolescent minded, do any of the pictures have any contribution to understanding her or Douglas for that matter?

Baloney. I know high school kids who write better than she does.

She’s got her nose up Hillary’s butt.

CZJ is an actor. Celebrities/actors are not required to have us know what they think. They are only obligated to provide us good entertianment. Unfortunately we know the thoughts of too many Hollywooders.

Don’t be so sure. These airheaded “socialites” often spend huge sums on perfectly hideous haircuts, clothes, shoes, baubles, etc. Fashionable haircuts are like “haute couture” clothing — usually an inverse correlation between price and attractiveness. Check out this photo from the homepage of designer Jimmy Choo, whose junk is much coveted by the Cate Edwards set. http://www.jimmychoo.com/pws/Home.ice

Wearing only a swimsuit and shoes, carrying a handbag, and sporting what is no doubt a “designer” haircut, this sorry-looking model is very expensively decked out. Jimmy Choo shoes start at about $600/pair, and the handbags run between $1000 and $4000. I’m sure the swimsuit is from some similarly priced designer, and the haircut at least $300 at some trendy salon. You’re looking at a get-up that cost $3-5000.

They’re goofing around having fun. Nothing wrong with that. Much wilder things go on at Bohemian Grove, which has been attended by all sorts of respectable political and business figures, including Ronald Reagan.

Poor girl, she's not bad looking, but she got her mother's build, and her father's face.

I spend around $1500 on electricity for a modest-sized home, but that’s without any effort to minimize the electric bill. If we made an effort to always turn out lights when they’re not really needed, switch to all or mostly compact fluorescent bulbs, not leave the TV on when nobody’s watching, hang the laundry out to dry instead of using the dryer, and set the a/c thermostat higher in the summer, I expect the household could be operated on $800. And many Americans DO make those efforts.

MoDo faces the problem of "hypergamy." That is across time and cultures it has been noted that women marry in the same or better class. It seems wired into females. Contrarily, men often marry down the class structure for a particularly nubile, young female.

Hypergamy creates problems for very successful and for underclass women. The very successful, upwardly mobile woman finds few if any potential mates in her own class or above. They usually strive mightily and sometimes succeed but they frequently come in second to a more attractive, younger woman.

Hypergamy is a serious problem for the underclass woman and especially the underclass Black woman. The government provides assistance (in Minnesota) of about 25k or better if you add in all the freebies and subsidies. This is just for being employed as a mother. She stands to lose big time if she marries a man who makes less than $12-15 dollars an hour. So she doesn't marry and the men are relegated to sperm bank donors; this also results in considerable male resentment in that the underclass woman is consistently financially better off than the underclass male.

I’d imagine that MoDo spends....

It's a shame her name isn't Doreen Dowd.
