SAN FRANCISCO — David Halberstam, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who chronicled the Vietnam War generation, civil rights and the world of sports, was killed in a car crash Monday, his wife and local authorities said. He was 73.

Halberstam, of New York, was a passenger in a car that was broadsided by another vehicle in Menlo Park, south of San Francisco, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said. The cause of death appeared to be internal injuries, he said.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m., and Halberstam was declared dead at the scene, Menlo Park Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said.

The driver of the car carrying Halberstam and the person driving the car that crashed into his were injured, but not seriously.

I wonder how fast that Infiniti was going to do that much damage.

That’s THE classic photo of the *Baltimore* Colts, Johnny Unitas, and the 1958 playoff.

We had a 4x6 foot blowup of it hanging in the family room for my entire boyhood.

It is an amazing photo. I thnk I have seen it before but somehow it didn’t grab me like it did today. We used to go eat at The Golden Arm, Johnny U’s place in Baltimore.

Yep, we went to the Golden Arm and also Bill Pellington’s Iron Horse often. Also Ameche’s IIRC in Towson.

Art Donovan had a liquor store in Towson and used to call my father “blondie”, then gave us lollipops. A real joker. He also had his Vally Country Club (??name?? also known as “Donovan’s”) and until recent years my parents were still going occasionally. The kind of place you’d go for someone’s wedding reception.

You remember Gino’s burgers of course (Gino Marchetti). They were everywhere.

Very sad.

Maybe the Infiniti driver is a VIP. Strange that he/she has not yet been identified.
