SAN FRANCISCO — David Halberstam, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who chronicled the Vietnam War generation, civil rights and the world of sports, was killed in a car crash Monday, his wife and local authorities said. He was 73.

Halberstam, of New York, was a passenger in a car that was broadsided by another vehicle in Menlo Park, south of San Francisco, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said. The cause of death appeared to be internal injuries, he said.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m., and Halberstam was declared dead at the scene, Menlo Park Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said.

The driver of the car carrying Halberstam and the person driving the car that crashed into his were injured, but not seriously.

Sad. If he would have been in a gas-guzzling Excursion than that P.O.S. Honda, he probably would have lived.

Very sad.

When I see pictures like that, and see the kinds of drivers out there on the roads, I want to buy a tank.

But if he’d been in an Excursion, how could a POS have made a comment?

That's too bad. He was an icon of the MSM, but we'll probably never see his final work, which IMO would have been a great story:

"Halberstam was working on a book, "The Game," about the 1958 NFL championship between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants, often called the greatest game ever played, said his wife, Jean Halberstam."

My guess is that it’s a 87-89 Toyota Camry. I had one for a long time - same color as in the picture.

The NY Post reported that he was on his way to interview Y.A. Tittle for his book on the 1958 NFL championship game between the Colts and Tittle’s NY Giants.

Tittle didn’t join the Giants until 1961.

It’s a small detail, but they can’t even get the small things right.

No word on if any charges are going to be filed or who was driving either of the other two cars.

Not to be crass, but what’s the early line on the driver of the other car being in the United States legally? I’m thinking 8-13 against, considering it was San Mateo County...

Well, I’m beginning to wonder. Though no charges have been filed, they named the driver of the car Halberstam was in, but not the drivers of other two cars.

The greatest game ever played.

1958 NFL Championship with the Golden Arm Johnny Unitas (19).

"Fifteen Hall of Famers on the same field. And one master. Unitas was the master."

Also coaches Weeb Eubank, Don Shula, Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry.

That’s the kind of T-bone collision where a seat belt might be a liabiity.

Halberstam's car was hit by another passenger sedan, a late model green Infiniti. Still no word on whether or not charges will be filed, and no ID on the Infiniti's driver.
